    newbi turbo troubles

Hi, finally found a decent t5 but under hard accelaration and when I lift off there is a large whoosh from what sounds like the dump valve and the car isn't pulling as it it should, could this be the waste gate stuck open? and would it be a hard job to do, had boost problems with my corrado g60 but that turned out to be a split hose could the happen on a turbo? Nice site thanks James.

    Hello James and

The woosh is perfectly normal. It is there recirc valve opening to allow excess pressure to escape. All the standard T5 Mitsi turbos have 'em.

How do you know that the car is not pulling as it should?

Airleaks are common on hoses - but mostly that is down to age. The actuator needs to be properly set up (to 4psi). Best advice is to get a boost gauge to show what you are currently producing and go from there.

Where are you and what car in particular are we talking about.

    Enjoy the foruim

Thanks it's a '95 M 850 t5 with a 145k on the clock, service history and all old MoT's and is in very good condition with lots of (working) toys, it dosn't have any oil leaks and driving normally it's fine, the boost gauge works ok but I'm doubtfull how accurate oem gauges can be. The car wont go past 5k rpm and it's as if the ecu is retarding the fuel. I'm going to go through the fault codes this afternoon, if there are any. I had a Toyota gt4 that the ecu would lower the boost if there was a fault is there a similar set up on the t5? My first thoughts were the wastegate as I had a RS Turbo that did the same but after a quick wastegate swap it was fine.
    Thanks James.

'85 rover vitesse with upgraded cams (very thirsty)
'99 bmw 318is all m teched up with 19" alloys (currentley the wifes)
'88 renault 5 gt turbo (flying coke can, not safe had 2 of these)
'85 series 1 rs turbo (1st one nicked 2nd right dog)
'91 corrado g60 (currentley in my garage, WHEN it goes, it's good)
'92 Golf gti 16v (last of the big bumper model)
'89 Pug 1.9 gti (would buy another tomorrow for the cheap to run fun)

Had many many more XR4, XR2, merc 190 but one of the worst along with an MG Metro was the Toyota GT4 not that quick very thirsty plus someone nicked the ecu!! Toyota don't or wont supply them any more!

I'm sure the volvo is going to be up there when it's runing 100% my father tested a yellow t5r saloon when it was a year old, ever since I've wanted a t5 now i have the kids I have a perfect reason for one.

Check the vac hoses between the Boost contol solenoid (usually clamped on to the side of the air box).

Check the elbow joints on the breathers (left hand end of the intake manifold)

Check the IC hoses for splits

Don't see many of them about thesedays. I'm not a big ford fan, but still think that in stock form that is one of the nicest looking cars around. Shame that everyone with a 1.1 mk3 escort tried to copy it (unsuccessfully!).
