Question S60R Oil - which is right product?

I love my S60R but will never buy another purely based on the dismal franchise service. Is it that Volvo don't really help dealers understand the R models specialist nature or the adage 'pay peanuts..... whatever they seem to employ monkeys.

I would love to change dealer but being a 25k a year car even changing the service agent to another Volvo dealer won't help me sell it next summer and given the ridulous depreciation I won't do anything to further dent the buyer interest!

Now the 36k service is due I dug out the 1st and 2nd service docs and found at 12k Johnsons charged me for Fully Synthetic Shell while the same dealer charged me for shell semi synthetic at 24k service. So which is it anyone know for certain because I guess my dealer doesn't?

Johnsons have all my local sites and having had a gearbox removal required (under warranty thankfully) at another one of their branches the car came back with the steering wheel 30 degrees out, it went back in and they straightened it but after a month of dreadful steering feel I returned to the orginal branch to be charged over £100 for wheel alignment. Any of you feel I've been had?

So please can you ley me know about the oil, take my advice it is worth it over a T5 (I've had both), but don't bother with Volvo Agents in the Midlands.

Oil wise, i allways put in mob 1 fully sys,(my volvo dealer recomends it for my car) cars now covered over 60,000miles, i sometimes feel its maybe too thin, engine sounds abit tappity.

in the volvo s60r handbook(which u should have), it says engine oil should be used that complies with "ACEA A3" and also says doesnt matter weathers it fully or semi sys

u can use grades from 0w-30 right through to 15w-40 and anything inbetween

"Exceeding industry standards and the major leading builder requirements is the cornerstone of the performance reserve that lets Mobil 1 0W-40 keep performing well after conventional oils cannot. Mobil 1 0W-40 provides the widest range of protection -- providing the extreme cold start protection of an 0W grade and the high temperature protection of an SAE 40 grade. "

this oil covers the acea a3 part, the mobile 1 0w-40, gives the best of both worlds

Agreed with with last comment, ive had alot bother with mine aswell, but still i enjoy owning and drivimg it, i also have had a s60 t5, the R is very different from the t5 , good and bad!

It is not a fully ester based synthetic oil.

ITG Filter, few HICO styling bits.

I took my 2005 S60 R to Johnsons of Gloucester a couple of months ago. They said 0/30 fully Synthetic was recommended for the R engine.

Bt I am sure the other grades would not hurt if it was a case of just topping up.

Taken from my oil sheet, printed by castrol oil for volvo cars uk (which we use daily to work out what oils are required),

    S60R & V70R 5 Cylinder Turbo:
    Optimum Protection
    ACEA A£/B3/B4 OR A5/B5
12,000 OR 12,500 Mile Service Interval
CASTROL SLX PROFESSIONAL LONGTEC 0w30 FULLY SYNTHETIC

There is also a standard protection listed for the same model (5w30 fully synthetic Castrol SLX Proffesional) but in the R models we would only use optimum protection oil

I get confused, in my service book, it says Volvo recommend Castrol, which is fine, but why do the Dealers stock Shell?

Not that I am complaining cause if there engine oil is the same as the Fuel, then thats good. Maybe its just another case of Shell being cheaper, as they seem to be cheaper than BP in Feul terms.

Dealers should be using Castrol, as its what volvo specifically recommend, we do and have done for some time. Some dealers still use Shell though, but as long as its the same grades and meets the same spec i suppose there is no reason not use another brand, but Castrol Oil is what dealers generally should be stocking.

    Hi mate

You can use the same two oils as above, though we would use 'standard' protection in the T5 engine (and all other petrol and diesel engines of the same year), due to cost unless the customer specifies different - with the optimum oil prices scaring our customers away generally! However, both the following oils are listed as below, and the choice is yours:

Standard Protection: Castrol SLX Professional 5w 30 Fully Synethetic

Optimum Protection: Castrol SLX Professional Longtec 0w 30 Fully Synethetic
