my car is starting to turn white when wet

Hi i have a regency red 1998 v70r. i have had it a year and never noticed it last year at all. the problem is when the car gets wet or damp one wing mirror turns white <only the top half of the mirror>, when i first noticed it i thought someone had poured something on it, i then got a sponge out to see if i could remove the white patches but nothing happend so i dried it and 20mins later the mirror looks sparkling red<perfect>, i have now been looking round the car for more of this and have found more white staining on the front bumper and other mirror and one dot on the boot spoiler. my neighbours must think i am mad as now i am having to get the hair drier out after washing the car to get rid of it . any body no what this could be ,because it realy has just started happening.

    cheers

IMHO you need to polish out the car. I can help

Sounds like indeed a bit of TLC could be in order - having seen and dealt with this issue on the BRVs I have owned

Chemical guys do excellent wash stuff.

    I use this...
    http://www.bigredvolvos.co.uk/images...C/2buckets.jpg

extreme body wash. Washing however is not the problem. Washing is just to remove surface contaminents. You have oxidized paint.

Faded paint needs cutting with a decent polish and that will probably mean using a machine. Would advise employing a local valeter to mop/machine cut the car for you.

so when i polish the car all i will realy be doing is masking up the poor paint. so a good mopping should cure it . i have see mops in halford for sale ,is this some thing i could do myself with the proper cutting compound.

There is a difference - polish is not wax - I wonder if you are confusing the 2?

Polish has no silicone or wax in it. It is used to flat the clear coat, remove swirls and scratch marks. It is a permanent fix to the problem.

Once the polishing is complete you should glaze(optional), seal and finally wax the car.

BTW if you do this on your own then you should also clay the car after the wash/dry step.

There is more advice from the real experts on www.detailingworld.co.uk

I did a lot of reading - but don't really think I am an expert yet - more a keen amateur

This question is aimed at Dave forgive me if my question is stoopid,
So why don't they laquer a red base coat car, surely that sould solve the problem? or would it then oxidise under the laquer,
As you know mine is a red based paint, but it is a pearlescent Purple,

I had a red escort many years ago with same problem and was told it was due to a pigment in the paint. polished it but after a few months it was back i have seen this on many red cars also

according to my list the only recency red volvo done was Pearl Red/Recency red metallic [paint code 418 which you can check] if this is your paint then you could have a different problem because it will have red base coats followed by a pearl fleck [metallic] then the varnish finish. What you may be seeing is where the varnish has worn away leaving the fleck coat appearance which is often a fine aluminium dust, not sure if revarnishing will solve the problem.

Polished out the corsa @ VT this week. It too was suffering from afflictions associated with Red paint. Enough to say that the results were pretty spectacular (even if I do say so myself)

methinks I need to get pics

the car looks perfect when left to dry no white at all but when its wet or damp thats when the colour goes very white and will not wash off or tcut out , but changes back red a couple of hours after drying with no evidence of white.
    pics will be up tomorrow

here is some pics for u ,remember this does not wipe off and only goes when completely dry and then the paint looks spot on, and it is normally the whole top half of the mirror and abit on other mirror to and bumper and now spoiler.

I may be wrong but that looks like the moisture is UNDER the clearcoat....

not at all what I was expecting to see having had a red orion in the past that went pink/white after a few years.
