    V70 - Brake Squeal

Hi everyone, hope you can help. I am relatively untechnical, and my hearing is not what it usd to be, but one thing I do know is that my 1998/R V70 T5 has the most annoying brake squeal imaginable. I have heard of this elsewhere, and would like any helpful suggestions as to how to fix this. The car has been in and out of 'hospital' courtesy of a local Volvo specialist, but even he can't fix it. Apparently the pads/discs are standard Volvo. Could anyone suggest a different setup/brand/upgrade which might work, or do I just need to get them thoroughly cleaned/lubricated (see I said I wasn't technical!). Also rough estimates of how much this might cost (cheap would be good) and some recommendations of a reliable garage/man/woman in the South East (Kent/Sussex) who might be able to quieten the old gal down a bit. It puts my teeth on edge every time I stop at the lights. Please help. Jason.

    HI Jason,

Welcome to VPCUK. The cheapest option would be to take the brakes off , clean/file all rust off the pads and brackets, careful light lube with copper grease (not on the pads), and put back on. BUT I would have hoped this would have been done by the specialist.

Others will be along to help out shortly with helpful suggestions...

    Tim

I'm no expert either, i would say that either they need replacing or you have a heavy right foot and drive everywhere as fast as you can with lots of heavy breaking and this causing the brakes to glaze over with the heat.

    Those would be my guess.

It's caused by a mixture of brake dust and the pads moving slightly in the calipers and I bet it happens at low speeds , in slow moving traffic after a run? You need to get some shims (rubberish pads that go between the brake pad and piston to stop the resonance) added and some copper grease to the back of the pads etc.

I deliberately do it when next to traffic wardens...... you can see the 'nails down the blackboard' faces.......it's an art form to make it screech violently at slow speeds........

Check out here. Mine had the same, did this and solved it. Also suggest you replace discs as well.

If you don't want to get your hands dirty, I know that Stuart @ SW Autos in Kent is ace at fixing this kind of stuff. At least, when my V70 had the same problem, he got it sorted.

Thanks guys - never knew you cared! By all means keep them coming. Thanks for the recomendation Alastair - I know him well, in fact I think I've just been driving the 850 T5 with the cracked windscreen that you have been enjoying in France for a while - am I right?? Stuart's brilliant, but he hasn't fixed my squeal yet - been sorting a more pressing problem with my ABS/TRACS ECU - darn it. Will mention these silicon things suggested by Wobbly Dave et al above.

Yeah, you're right - he was kind enough to loan me the the silver 855 for a while - guess the crack in the screen must be fixed by now. It's got my exhaust on it too so I hope you like the noise
