Blackbeastie is correct but shell ultra helix for my chariot!!
Kind of rather depends what car you have!
Turbo = 5w40 Fully Synth
Non Turbo = 10w40 Semi Synth
IMO.

I favour castrol 10-40 magnatec and change it every 5k , I do a fair few cold starts in winter and like the protection.

much appreciated all the useful replies, i am running 10 40 semi which is making my engine tap at 2-3000 rpm. its a t5r with 101k on the clock and I was asking a simple question as I have had 15 different answers so far from garages and dealers alike. I was under the impression thats what this forum was for and I have already done the searches as with tapping, rattling ect. again the useful replies are much appreciated.

is 5-40 thinner than 10-40? I am trying to work out if its too thick and not reaching some oil ways or too thin and not working as it should.
rich
the higher the numbers the thicker it is
cheers
Both are the same thickness when hot, the 5 is a lot thinner when cold.Originally Posted by bigrich1

I think because these engines have hydraulic tappets, go for the fully synth 5w/40 as it is important to keep the gap right on the tappets AND you have a very hot turbo whizzing around at the end of it, so you need a good quality fully synthetic. I use Valvoline where possible, or shell helix ultra 5w/40, change every 4-5k miles (7-8k km on my car!). Ask VT about this or do a search for 'OILMAN' as he did a good response on this subject!
hey thanks babybadger. very helpful, i will take your advice.

I use magnatec 10-40 with adash of slick 50 for extra slipperyness
