    Any ideas in deep trouble.....

ive just changed the top engine mount on my T4 and the clunking sound is still there, i was told that the noise i was getting was the mount as they are known to go, but after changing the mounting and further inspection (many hours of puzzling and guessing, then second guessing) it appears to be coming from the gearbox, the only way to describe it is as a clunk type noise, metal on metal, this only seems to happen when accelerating, or when you come off the throttle and step on it again, all signs lead to an engine mount, but now im stumped and this i feel will again be expensive

any ideas guys, my thoughts are now either box or diff, anybody heard of this before....really stuck

and its in for its 90'000mile service on tuesday with VT but would like to have an idea of what it is before i get there if at all possible.

    all ideas and thoughts appreciated

    Update!

ok, now im starting to get slightly annoyed with the whole thing, just spent a couple of hours replacing the last 2 mounts this afternoon, so i have a brand new set of 4 engine mounts on my car, upper engine, upper gearbox, and the 2 lower front and rear, and guess what.....

no differance in the "clunking" still just as loud and just as noticable....any more ideas to check, im still now thinking about diff/gearbox or maybe even a worn clutch, it doesnt appear to have had a new 1 in 90000 miles i cant find a reciept for 1 in the history i have of the car (which is very extencive), but there doesnt seem to be any loss of drive so maybe not clutch, at the end of my tether with it now................

Get it on a ramp or even in the drive if you have to and get some one else to dip the clutch etc you may be able to see something then ? don't take this the wrong way but its not your exhaust swinging on the rubbers is it?? really needs to go up on the ramps i think!!

ive had the front wheels in the air and put it into gear and looked under the bonnet whilst somebody has pressed the throttle, and you can see the engine move slightly (normal)but you can hear the almighy clonking noise when its put under any load and the same noise when you come off the throttle, i can only narrow the noise down to the left hand side of the engine bay, ive looked from the top, and underneath in all possible conditions, well all that you can manage with a couple of axle stands, i havent been looking at the exhaust though might give that a look failing all this i think it will be a job for VT just hope it doesnt work out to expensive

seems to me it could be suspension related if it doesn't do it when the weight is off the suspension??

surley if it was an engine mount it would clunk wheels in the air or not

Dont know what the T4 engine is like, but had a similar problem with mine, turned out to be the rubber in the lower right engine mount had collapsed. Couldn't tell until it was up in the air and lifted the front of the engine slightly with a gearbox jack.
I thought there was a light at the end of the tunnel,
it was just some fool with a torch bringing me more work

Lee, I'm pretty sure I have exactly the same thing on my T5, and it is hard to explain and make people understand. If for example your in 3rd gear and you accelerate and let off it clunks as the gear engages and disengages the drive? Do you have some slight play before it picks up the drive just before the clunk?

I thought it was my clutch or flywheel, which I have just had replaced along with some other work costing me just over £800 and guess what still got the clunk...I was so upset after spending all that money. I phoned the garage and he said he checked all of my mounts and when doing clutch etc had gearbox mounts off, he said they are all fine. So he thinks it can only be play in the Gearbox.

I have read on other threads that the diff bearings can go in them, which would mean a new box is required as they cannot be stripped down. Its a bitch huh. Im off to VT on the 28th July so will ask there opinion but i'm not optimistic.

Have you checked your driveshafts ,I had similar probs on my old Vectra, turned out to be the driveshafts in the end after changing mounts etc.Jack it up feel for any play???? Remember jacking it up one side at a time starting it up putting it in gear and there was a almight clunk coming off the nearside wheel when i revved it up

My friend drove my car tonight, he's convinced its an engine mount....The saga continues.
