Gearbox & PAS oil!?!

I think its about time that I change most of the fluids in the car, so coolant, powersteering, gearbox and brake fluid will all get changed. I will be using Motul most likely for the coolant and brake fluid, but i need to know what type of PS and gearboil oil (manual box) i need???

I think the PS is an ATF Dextron 2, is that correct?

What grade gearbox oil do i need? i.e 75w90??? Volvo are a lot of help as they just say its a synthetic Manual Gear oil.

Before anyone says it, im not going to use a volvo oil.

Hi why are you not using the correct volvo oil i no its expensive but anything else is not worth the risk.

the volvo manual gb oil is about £11 a litre you will need 2.1 litres.
the oil is 5w 30 but imo do not be tempted to put a syn engine oil in the gb.
i used the proper stuff which smells of gb oil.

Sorry if i wasnt being clear, it was meant to say that the Volvo gearbox oil is synthetic. I wouldnt use an engine oil in a gearbox. So what does 5w30 equate to in a gearbox oil?

and for your PS fluid, just get hold of some ATF type G (red), unless you have the volvo low temp fluid in there (more light green in colour), but that would only have been done by the last owner, as for your year it would usually be the standard red ATF-G in there.

Very interesting thread on Vovlo Community that, out of interest is there an upgrade for the Auto gearboxes???

Seems to be pretty good stuff this Redline oil.

E-mail Lucas Oils ( head office on Anglesey) they supply all the racing teams from over here. Some of the manufacturers information is out of date and there are new upgraded oils out there which is changing all the time..

My friend with a R32 Skyline went there quoting all the weird and wonderfull codes and the bloke sat there and laughed.. cos what he'd been told to use has been superceeded about 4 times since the car came out with better quality oils... as a result he's noticed that the transmission tunnel doesn't get as warm as it used to and gear changes are alot smoother......also for a list price of £150 for all the oils he purchased, he only paid £75....it's nice to be local....

Iv just came back from the Volvo dealer as i noticed my P/S fluid was low and i wanted to put in the proper stuff, the chap says if it is not the green fluid (which it is'nt) and its the red then to just put in normal ATF which i have just done,

He also said that they no longer use the red fluid anymore and have started using the green stuff, but the 2 colours can be mixed so he says ...
