Would there be any significant benefit if I were to de-cat my 1996 T5?
I've had a quick look & the Lamda sensor is before the cat, so by removing the cat shouldn't stick any lights on.....or am I wrong?

Some already have mate I also understand some peeps are actually reaching both CO levels at the MOT without one, tempting thought cause cats do drag you down (excuse the pun lol).

I cannot make a certified comment upon de-cat-ing a T5 but to remove the cat from any performance car WILL increase the flow hence help to release more gee gee's, just depends what else is happenin with the car and whether or not it's all runnin nice with the cat removed? Oh and a de-cat pipe is req...MOT n'all!!!

Very much depends on the year of your car, I did this and had nothing but problems.
As far as im lead to believe anything that runs the ME7 engine management or later wont run without the cat, so anything 1999 onwards basically.

I would say that you would have to be bloody lucky to get through current emmissions testing without a cat.
The CAT's gonna go... cheers everyone.
No problems for the MOT as I ...... errrrrrr....... work in an MOT centre.....shhhhh
Keep us posted on the results! Wouldnt mind knowing how much hassle and £££ it is for you as i may have a bash at it!

Again will repeat myself if you have an early car like an 850 by all means do it, DONT do it if you have a newer car you WILL have problems with it and probably destroy your standard exhaust in the meantime if you decide to cut it out of that.

I have contacted LongLife Exhausts in Leeds about making a replacement downpipe less the CAT in stainless.... received this reply
"Hi Stephen,
Thanks for your enquiry.
We can provide you an interchangable decat pipe for your T5 for £99.
Fitting is by appointment - we usually require a vehicle like yours for around 2 hours while we custom build and fit the system. If you chose to wait with your car, we have waiting facilities with coffee and internet access. If it makes life easier, we may be able to make a courtesy car available while yours is with us. There is no charge for a courtesy car, but there is an age restriction.
I trust that this is of interest to you. If you want to book in, or require any further information, then please call either myself or Lisa French on 0113 279 8944.
We are based on the Lakeside industrial estate, Tong road, Leeds, LS12 4QP.
Thanks for contacting us,
Regards,

Its the luck of the draw. Its all to do with the 2nd o2 sensor iirc. Cars that only have the 1 o2 sensor as standard shouldnt be really affected, such as the earlier models, BUT as ive already said, even then you still might get a new light on on the dash.
If you have 2 sensors then you have 3 options that are known to work:-
1. Get the rear o2 sensor disabled via ECU and decat
2. Race cat
With Option 1, I know VT can disable the rear o2 sensor but will most likely charge £££ for it. Then you have to get a decat as above for around £80-100. Come MOT time you will have to swap the CAT back in, so make sure you have flanges put on everything, which means the cost will go up.
Option 2 is fully legal with no faffing about changing exhausts around every year come MOT time. Ive seen 3" race cats around the £90 mark.
I know which one id rather do.
Yep option 2, its not too difficult to disable the rear o2 sensor but personally I think the car benefits from have a low resistance cat in with regards to back pressure etc.
Which 3' cats have you spotted on the net?

I went one better this week and de-exhausted my Escort van as i was driving through the Bell common tunnel on the M25,sounded like a bomb had gone off.Didn't give me any more power but was bloody loud.
Ben.
my t5 is on a 1995.
the best mod i did was the complete exhaust system including de-cat.
it made the car MUCH more lively, it spooled up much much quicker and basically transformed the car.
i put the cat back on for the mot, what a difference!
it diddnt chuck any warning light's, but then mine's a very early one..
thumb's up from me
I think 200 is about right, wont throw a warning light but still gives an improvement, may need adam or someone to confirm this though!
Any idea how much the 3' in one is?
