I jacked it up last night, and had a good look and listen. I can't get it to make the clicking noise whilst in the air. Seems it needs that load to click.

Front bushes are definately shot. There is play from side to side, but nothing top to bottom. The bushes don't help, but it also felt like there was some play in the steering rack. Is this possible, are they known to wear at 95k??

Did the 'clicking' disappear, or do you still have it?
It has been a step by step process, each noise has occured and been fixed over the last 6months or so (just the track rods to replace now and drop links and im all sorted)(i hope)

As for steering rack mines on 168000 now just replaced that because of movement not fluid.

You said you get no noise whilst shaking the steering so i would think you could rule out track rods, track rod ends and rack.

If i was in you position i would replace the lower swing arms first. then see how it is.

(does still sound like cv joints tho)

worn cv joints would click, but it would happen when moving and turning and clutch is not down. if you put the clutch down, the noise would stop. had plenty of these fail during my cavalier era

i think it will be the driveshafts moving, very common problem to dealers . they need glueing in with metal glue to stop this. however, if a wheelbearing/hub goes the driveshaft may not come back out.

C/V joints will almost certainly make themselves known if you turn on full lock and then pull away sharply. You will then hear a series of clicks or cracks which will then quieten down as you straighten the steering. The offending C/V joint is then normaly the one on the outer-most side of the turn. The only exception is certain Renault and Peugeot joints which have roller bearings inside instead of cage and ball bearings.

Just noticed this on my S60 - is it a problem or something that can be sorted... i was going to book the car into Mr V to have it looked at.

I checked mine, and it was just the pads. taking them out and refitting corrected it for a while, but they soon settled back and click again. It's nothing to worry about though.

It's just the damn clunking I can't cure. It's had new drop links, and lower wishbones, but after about a thousand miles, it has started again. ARB bushes are fine so it only leaves dampers or top mounts. Any opinions as to which is the more likely culprit??

thanks - i'll 'try' and sort the pads out ...

Hope you get the clunking sorted out - i know how frustrating these ramdom noises can be!!

I had faulty dampers on my old 5-series... wasn't much of a noise, more noticable when driving as the handlind suffered big time - was very vague at times, and there was a little bit of fluid leaking.

Madness was spot on - Volvo dealer & tube of locktight solved the rattle!
