    Clicking when pulling away - What's needed?

    I've done a search, but couldn't find anything conclusive.

    My P2 V70 T5 is clicking from the front when pulling away.

    Do I need a new CV joint? or new CV joint and Drive shaft? I need the car off the road for as little time as possible, so want to get the parts in advance.

    Towing a caravan to France in the July, so reckon i should get it sorted beforehand.

    Defo sounds CV joint related. Suggest jacking the car and moving the road wheel back and forth. Find the noise

    There are a number of possible things that could be causing this and I would have to suggest that you take it to a garage who can actually pinpoint the exact problem as you would probably end up replacing several parts before you found the precise cause of the 'clicking'.

    hi there, there is a mod from volvo for creaky driveshafts when setting off. Remove the shaft bolt [in cent of brake disc] push the cv joint inwards and grease up the splines, see if this helps before spending lots of money.

    I Haven't noticed. I have only noticed it when either reversing or pulling away.

    The car is a 2001 with 95k on it.

    I's more of a clicking/ticking noise than a creak. But may be worth a shot.

    Also if you get a mo sit on the brakes whilst shaking the steering and turning the steering lock to lock, let us know how you get on if you dont mind.

    Yep engine running, at a stand still but foot on brake.
    Shake first, note any noises (if any)
    then lock to lock several time, note noises.

    OK, I didn't get the chance to jack it up at the weekend as a little hectic, but have had a proper listen.

    The noise is a fairly high pitched metallic click, not a clonk (although I have that as well, will go on to that). It can only be heard from the outside, or with the window open. I can't hear anything when the car is rolling, it only really happens when first pulling away in either reverse gear or 1st. It's like the initial movement under load causes the first click, which may be followed quickly after by a couple more, but not always. This depends on how much load there is e.g. pulling up hill. It doesn't click constantly (that I can hear). So it's like someiting is worn and settles into position.

    It can go like this: Pull away, click, roll, no noise, brake, no audible noise over pad squeal!, accelerate whilst still rolling, click.

    I do have some clunking on the front as well, and upon my pre mot check, I found the front lower bushes to have some play, so these do need replaceing, but it is a totaly different sound.

    Do you agree that suspension components tend to clunk rather than click? (sounds like a seat belt advert doesn't it?)

    Sorry for the long post, but trying to describe as best as possible.

    Good explanation mate, like i say i havnt had experience with cv's but goin on what your saying i would agree with the original diagnosis of the cv joints. and yeah the ball joints etc do go clunk rather than click.
    (p.s i recommend a design of polyurethane type bush too)

    I was probably going to change the arms complete to save the hassle of removing old bushes. This way, I will renew all bushes and ball joints.

    With your extensive overhaul, was it done step by step, or did you do the lot in one go?

    Did the 'clicking' disappear, or do you still have it?

    It has been a step by step process, each noise has occured and been fixed over the last 6months or so (just the track rods to replace now and drop links and im all sorted)(i hope)

    As for steering rack mines on 168000 now just replaced that because of movement not fluid.

    You said you get no noise whilst shaking the steering so i would think you could rule out track rods, track rod ends and rack.

    If i was in you position i would replace the lower swing arms first. then see how it is.

    (does still sound like cv joints tho)

    Hi,

    This is Hamish not Nats !

    That clicking is the brake pads moving against the pad anti rattle springs and is absolutely zero to worry about all the P2 cars do it even when new.

    I jacked it up last night, and had a good look and listen. I can't get it to make the clicking noise whilst in the air. Seems it needs that load to click.

    Front bushes are definately shot. There is play from side to side, but nothing top to bottom. The bushes don't help, but it also felt like there was some play in the steering rack. Is this possible, are they known to wear at 95k??

    worn cv joints would click, but it would happen when moving and turning and clutch is not down. if you put the clutch down, the noise would stop. had plenty of these fail during my cavalier era
