    Post Intercooler Upgrades - advice

Having spent a nice hour or two on a Saturday afternoon relocating the horns on the T5 - a mod I was highly dubious bout as I couldnt see there would be a drastic improvemnt in intake temperature, but what the hell.
Anyway - I noticed the airflow through the intercooler was restricted more by bent fins (stone damage) and dead insect matter, than any notional interruption from the horns.
So - my "policy of upgrade, dont replace" arises along with a request for advice - anyone out there upgraded their intercooler? What did you use? and what benefits can you quantify??

Would I be better (bang for buck) just replacing the stock item?? Any advice welcome.

    Cheers:

Do a search on VolvoSpeed as quite a number of T5s have FMIC over there. Also have a search on here for Spesh, he has an RS500 fmic.

Edited to say your policy is spot on! Not sure how an upgraded acts with standard fuelling and boost though. Got a feeling you will need a remap to see the full benefit and for the engine to be in safe limits.

yo, i have removed an "ABBOTT RACING" intercooler from my saab 9000 which i intend to graft into my 5, it was £500 and thier bumph about it claims an extra 10 horses without any need for anything else doing.

when i removed it, i grafted a t5 intercooler onto the 9000 to keep it driving and the power drop low down in the rev range was substansial.

hopefully it will give me the same benifits when it goes on the t5.

Did the upgrade on mine, unfortunately it was upgraded pretty much at the same time as everything else so any improvements in performance couldnt really be noticed!

I know VT will say you wont need an aftermarket FMIC and the Volvo one is good enough.

A while ago a mate of mine had a 200SX. He was asking where he could get hold of a T5 intercooler as they were considered to be a good upgrade!

The standard 200SX intercooler is some tiny sideways wing mounted effort, so any FMIC would be an improvement.

id like to think it will provide a bit more oomph, but i dont have enough of an understanding of the finer details of forced induction to say yes or no at the mo.
all i can say for sure is my 9000 turbo took more time and revs to get to full boost when i grafted the t5 i/c into it.
the high pressure pipe runs were nearly the same, so i dont think that affected it, and it was mounted in the same place, but who knows ,i may have damaged something or a coincidental prob may have occured.
the saabs fuel/ign ecu would also have had pleanty of time to adapt to any changes.

hopefully it wont be a time consuming waste of money.

    hi everyone
since we're talking intercooler upgrades, what do you think about the stock intercooler on a 2001 S60 T5 ? is it good for more heat than stock in your opinion? i guess the stock turbo pushed something like 0,7 bar and with the chip it's now pushing 1,0 bar. but that's not a big deal i guess... i shouldn't need any further cooling for that i hope ?

hi mate, i dont really understand the first part of your question, but your stock i/c will be able to cool your charge air no problem.

iirc, you have an estimated 280 hp, your stock i/c is good for well over
    300 hp.

    wayne.

    thanks a lot mate
poor use of english in the first part of my question really sorry about that. what i was trying to say was this : since the stock turbo boost is something like 10-11 psi, and since with the chip the boost is up around 14,5 psi, there should be more heat than usual for the i/c to deal with. but you answered the important part of the question anyway!
    cheers
