much harder, theyr surrounded by metal and need to be compressed into the control arm.
a big vice, lots of diff sized sockets and loads patience should do it, but if you damage the control arm,...

wierd, inhibitor switch prevents the car being started whilst in gear and its got a switch on it to enable the reverse lights.

as BB said, change ATF if not pink, old and overheated ATF can play havoc with the gear changes.
it leaves varnish type deposits on everything in the box.
theres a product called FORTE auto box...

evap valve sits in front of the pass front wheel, its black, cylindrical, 10"x 6",
two pipes, one goes under rad and then and back to the fuel tank.
not sure about other pipe without checking.
