Popped the jack out today to change out a wheel in the garage, happen to notice a nasty cracking noise as the the jack began to take the weight of the car, not a big fan of these jacks so...

Probably not a good idea, (in regards to local laws and other road users).

That sounds like your rear fog light switch, it illuminates on the instrument cluster, and should illuminate one rear fog light in your case I think left side rear.
