What's the return spring like on the ignition barrel, ie does it return back to position position 2 after cranking as sometimes these get worn and the ignition stays inbetween the 2 not giving you...

I looked at this car when it was for sale and the owner said that it was definitely head gasket although I reckon it could be the rad mixing water and oil together as it is a common fault?...

Sometimes the radiator fails which causes the oil and water to mix giving the same symptoms as head gasket, so make sure it's the right diagnosis.
