Preemptive engine work

Is it cheaper to recondition a working engine rather than waiting for it to die and then doing it?

Would it be a case of new piston rings, or would it need doing properly with new internals too? I'm happy for the engine to live around the 320bhp mark so I won't be wanting the expense of stronger upgrades, just stock.

I ask because i'm thinking of doing the whole turbo/exhaust combo on an 180k 855, but don't want to kill the engine due to it being tired (or wasting the upgrades on an engine not willing for that power)

A few of us have had engine problems, so I'd love any opinions on the matter.

Speaking from past experience with other engines, I dont think it really matters wether you rebuild it now or later. As long as you dont actually blow up the engine then its not going to add anything to the cost. If your just wanting to freshen up the engine then your looking at new rings,bearings, scuff up the bores,oil pump,skim the head, possible new camshafts. I'm sure theres lots more that needs considering and theres plenty of people to tell you what I've not mentioned.

if you do rebuild with 180k on the clock personaly i would get it rebored but then the cost will shoot up as you will need oversized pistons and new rings

Why would you get a rebore?, you would only do that if it has a bad lip on the bore, an inspection would be needed first, and it may only need to be honed.

Can the ECU cope with a rebore? Anyway it hardly consumes oil at the moment (maybe half a litre every 5k) so as far as I know there's nothing wrong with it, more a case of attempting to protect an investment (if spending money on a T5 can ever be called an investment! lol)

Half a Litre every five K, most vehicles use some oil, and thats not a lot.

tomcat, are there any uprated cams known for our engines?
Stu, you're right I've got that wrong. It's just over a litre every 5k.

just my expiriance on high milers for example i used to maintan a fleet of taxis and had to rebuild a fair few of tham also had a bad time with a small lip on one of them for some reason after new rings the top ring hit the lip and broke so just do a rebore on my engines of ther is more than half a mill of lip

I dont know to be honest, I would approach somebody like Kent cams or perhaps Piper cams. A cam change used to be one of the first mods I would do, but on these there are lots or other things you can do first.

I used to have a supra turbo (pop up headlight job). PPL used to use NA cams in the turbo as they had higher lift. Is this a possibilty on T5 motors?

Yeah I've heard that rumor too, apparently use the cams from a 2.5 n/a , but as I say it may only be a rumor

I am looking for a recondition engine company for my V40 T4 do you no of any?

Yeah, the NA cams are different to the turbo ones.
Smithy, who used to be on here, put NA cams on his, and the h beam rods, and s60r pistons, and much more. Then someone wrote it off.
