I use east Europeans. :D
Menzerna polishes are good for the hard paint on the volv
What prep work have you done before applying a polish?
You're welcome to come and practice on mine :)
dont normally prep anything
new to proper polishing so dont wanna jump in with bars and D.A's just yet
just a polish for now
The issue is, most polishes are designed to make the paint shine, but if the paint isn't properly cleaned first, you won't get the best results. If you want a quick fix with little outlay, I'd suggest something like an all in one cleaner,Polish and wax like Meguiars Cleaner Wax. If you have light swirl marks, use the Meguiars Ultimate compound first. £20 odd for both products.
cheers mike
Well Geoff you are going to get a much better result by prepping for polish first.
I use a Bilt Hamber Auto Clay Bar, so simple to use. It takes away all the crap off the surface of the paint that is left behind by just washing, old polishes and wax etc. Use it and you'll be shocked at how dirty that little lump of clay becomes.
Then use whatever recommended polish then crucially wax/sealant to lock in the shine and provide protection to the paintwork, VERY IMPORTANT!
Here are the results of Bilt Hamber Clay Bar, Bilt Hamber Cleanser Polish (applied by hand) and then Bilt Hamber Auto Balm Sealant on my 480 2 years ago. Incredible colour and shine!

Aarrgghh, damn you Dave!
I'd just about convinced myself that I was going to break my 480, but after seeing Poppy, Nipper's future is again unclear! :(

I still miss that car!
so do I but keep on topic please :)
seconded!
Mike & Davey to the rescue as usual with paint! Very useful, thanks chaps
On my own gay gold example, I wash it only when really necessary - as I think my car washing skills make the car worse rather than better. I think I use some kind of Turtle Wax all in one.
Is it made from real turtles I wonder.
My regime has been for years...
2 bucket technique, wash with Meguires Gold Class Shampoo, dry with chamois, wax with Meguires NXT Tech Wax 2.
Easy and very effective (as mentioned in that other thread).
PS - Any paint correction, scratch and swirl removal is done after the shampoo stage, usually with Meguires Scratch X.
It's old school and easy, I've never got as far (or needed) all this clay bar malarky!
I've been blessed with my S70 Saffron due to the previous owners taking really good care of it so I havn't had a chance to really detail it.
If you want to get into detailing and not go too over board then what is advised (by me) is-
a sheepskin wash mitt
any decent car shampoo
a clay mitt
Meguiers compound
Autoglym super resin
Simoniz hard wax
I have also recently bought Meg's tire gel and trim restorer which gives a really nice finishing touch to the tyres and plastics

These are what I have used with really good results.
