Help with strange electronics (REM?)

Hi all,

Recently bought a 2000 P2 V70 2.3 T5 Manual with 3" DP and 2.5" catback

Superb car, but some annoying niggles are as follows;

1. When lock and unlock the car with remote fob, the rear wiper moves about 2 inches through its sweep?

2. On the centre console, there is a button which cycles through the rear electronic child locks. This also moves the wiper about 2 inches into its sweep with each press of this button.

3. Usually when manouvering in reverse, or sometimes very slow moving traffic, the dash will through up an ABS and anti-skid (STC) this disables the cruise control and also the car is a little jerky when on and off the throttle. This can be resolved, instantly by turned the engine off, then starting it again, the abs light stays on till the self test is performed as 18 ish mph then all ok.

4. SRS Service Required. Unsure whether a module has gone bad or just something not been connected when the ingition was put on. As I understand it, I need diagnostics in excess of £150 to read/clear ABS codes?

Any ideas?

I know the easiest way is to get the codes read, but my thread about a code reader for the P2 didnt attract many comments and id rather not have to pay Volvo for a code read and £50-80 a pop.

at a guess id say check the wireing where it goes through the hinges,maybe a wire has chafed through and is shorting out onto the locking wire,therefor when you lock or unlock it puts power down that wire for a second or two...thus poering the wiper for a second or two...........

as for the abs /sts light...
that might be a sensor on one of the wheels......
and as for the service warning....that will need to be plugged into diagnostics .
while its pluged in you can check the abs fault...that will tell you whats wrong etc.......
you dont have to go to a dealer to read or rectify...
most good garages have diagnostics equiptment so they should be able to do it for you.

Also noted the reverse lights light up very briefly when locking the car.

Just to check, are you saying the tailgate hinges either side where they go into the roof?

yeah.just check its not damaged etc

1. 100% bad earth. on the alarm/central locking/Lights circuit.

2. AS ABOVE - SAME FAULT AS THEY ARE RELATED TO THE SAME CIRCUIT.

3. Almost certain this is related to AS ABOVE.

4. Main dealer or Volvo specialist will read the SRS fault. Most dealers only charge half hour labour to read codes, that's £45 + VAT.

You haven't got 4 faults, only 2. :smile:

NB: Try disconnecting the battery earth for 10 minutes. Make sure you turn on the ignition before you reconnect earth terminal. It's called a battery reset and is FOC. This may cure some odd faults, just like rebooting a pc when it crashes. Trust me, i am in the trade and do this regularly....it works most of the time.

Hi, thanks for this.

I've already tried the battery reset to no avail.

In the service records there is an invoice for a new rear module due to lighting failure.

Maybe this has not been earthed correctly?

Dont suppose you know where said earths are for the circuits concerned?

I'm going to have the codes read, maybe this will pin point where the error is occurring.

You need to check the main chassis earths. In the rear of the car there is another fuse box, you need to check the earth on that too. As for the exact location of that earth - not sure m8. You could have a mission on your hands. I had a Renault with exactly the same symptons...rear wiper moved when you unlock or lock the car. Therefore it is not a Volvo thing...it is an earth fault on the rear wiper circuit.

HLM in Bromsgrove diagnosed the fault(s) to a faulty REM.

This was replaced and programmed to the car, all is well now.
