Door removal Torx bits or other ?

Lo all, I need to take Mrs Mas's door of for a bit of weldong.

Having read folks tips on the forum have I got this right.

Don't take the hinges off, remove the star type bolt holding check strap on and remove the two hinge pins also twist off the electrical connector.

Now if I have then I see I need a torx bit for the check strap but also what looks like a female ( torx ??) to take out two star type items holding each of the hinge pins in. I assume that I take these star things out then knock the hinge pins out. The thing is I can find a torx bit set for a tenner but I cant find any female star shaped socket to go over this male star dhaped 'thing' sticking out of each hinge pin.

Am I off the mark here , what do I need please.

Yes, just like life really, plenty of male things to fit in female things - but precious few female things that will find a male thing of an acceptable size to fit.

Thanks Phil , amazingly I googled and got many results from that site but NOT one for taking a door off. The only thing is many folk are saying under no circumstances take the hines off ( as he did) and tht door alignment will be a pig if you do ? Not too sure if i should head that advice and get toex tools or ignore it and take the door hinges off with the door ( bolts only)

Either way I'll need a torx tool for the check strap.

yeh as stated its a female torx bit you need, you can take the hinges off but the panel gaps are quite tight so will be a nightmare getting it lined up so the doors shut properly. I got my bit from Halfords

If you have no torx sockets you can just tap a (IIRC) 6mm standard socket on the male torx bolts that hold the hinges in place. The doors just lift off... there is no need to knock any hinge pins out

A generous offer ! , and I'll keep you in mind m8ee. I have found a set with male and female Torx for 15 quid online and it would probably do half that in petrol to yours and back so I mustn't be to tight lol

Also , Mrs M has read quite a bit on the door and been informed that the week spot tends to go again and again even if welded and there may be a better way to fix it. I confess that I havn't read up on it yet due to the fact that her MOT is due in 3 weeks and the ABS lights are still on.

We have a dilemma because the cars value is limited with 6 pounds per gallon approaching fast but we do love the car.

My suggestion is put the door on hold and put her through an MOT to see what she fails on. Personally I think that apart from one possible tyre which is irelevent, only the ABS should be a problem as the car is a good one.

I think MOT first before 'wasting' any effort on the door or tyres etc is my suggestion ??

As long as there are no suprises get her MOT'd then worry re a creaky door !

Back on the ABS , I have been good today and took the front wheels off to check the reluctor rings as suggested here on VPCUK. It's difficult for me to know what I'm looking for having never seen any before but I moved the wheels round and there are no teeth missing quite worn maybe ? and one side was very mucky but the other very clear to see. If I had to guess I'd say they are O.K which is bad news as it doesnt really help.

Just reopening this thread as door removal for a check strap fix is going to be a little job for me next week.

I'm still not quite certain how to get the door off.

Some say don't touch the hinge bolts and suggest just lifting off after disconnecting electrics via pushing a pin and twisting the circular connector, removing a top hinge grub screw, check strap torx bolt and loosening the check strap door bolts. Then lifting off the door.

Please could someone confirm how to take a front door off in the easiest manner possible?

PS - This is regarding my 850.

yeh just remove the grub screw in the hinge, but don't unbolt any of the hinge part itself

I found a ¼ inch socket is a better fit over the hinge Torx than a 6mm.

Thank Mr Hound, I shall have both socket and Torx ket ready for this Saturday morning job (if it's not raining) :)
