Still undecided as to which route to go.new engine is unnecessary. I picked up a spare head b4 xmas. There is a just a block on ebay however for darton liners i would reuse the current block as the cylinders get machined out.
I think i am leaning towards longevity so lower pressures but higher rpm so darton liners seems excessive.
I would have a word with Shem, see if he's got any of his closed deck blocks left.
Thanks Jim but pressing them out isn't gonna save much money, as I suspect the engineering time required to re-introduce to another block will be as expensive as starting from scratch.
Bought a 2nd hand block from e-bay in Germany from a 2003 S60.
Going to get it shimmed and honed and go from there. The oil/water mixing is only since the reassembly last year - never run properly. I will check the wiseco gudgeon wrist pins and see if they need replacing but bear in mind the reassemble engine has less than 5 miles on it. I will get new shells anyway, as the new block/crank ladder will be different.
I will get in touch with Tim or Shem to get the new block shimmed or closed completely.
Fingers crossed that the head is not cracked.
I found Shem's closed deck mod on e-bay.

they do look a thing of real beauty in real life, they are a really professional job if mine wasn't shimmed already i'd be going closed deck
The annoying things is I asked MJA to put in some deck support when they were doing it the first time. No point crying over it now.
My only concern about closed desk is the issue of cooling.
I will be going down the Evans waterless coolant route this time anyway.
I personally think Closed Decking is not necessary. If you really want to go down that path then there is other options which remove the cooling discussion of is cooling reduced or not and you can still have the liners shimmed as well http://www.kaplhenke.com/collections...-reinforcement, Yes it's for a 2.5 block but I have also seen them in a 2.3 block I just can't remember who it was who had it?
A big freeze would help all remaining components of your build Dave
I am also looking to the cryogenic processing you pointed out.
There's a massive mud slinging fest over on Swedespeed about block guards : http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthr...-R-2-5L-Status
I have no real clue if it's worthwhile or not, but I suspect not - certainly for most of us.
Amongst all the poop flinging was a link to a Polish firm doing a similar thing ; http://satistech.com/offer/closing-volvo-engine-blocks/
That seemed to appeal to more folks than the other way on that thread. I don't know what Shem does to be fair.
They cryogenic process is interesting another option for you is with the new block to shim and also add extra support around the clyinders in the water jackets
A friend who builds and runs cars in a BMW series used to go though components at an accelerated rate gear boxes mainly used to last 3-5 races he started using cyro treatment now boxes last hole seasons with refresh before the next season, he also has dipped pretty much hole engines in parts and his mechanical success has been excellent!
Another mate is now sending his O2J golf box away as they keep failing so will be able to see what the affects are on a normal box very soon as his last box only lasted 2 track days and it was given a clean bill of health after a rebuild so we will get to see with in a 3 months the results
That made for interesting reading Nick!
Tim runs just a shimmed block no other decking or nothing like it and runs over 400 bhp all day long and has never had no issues with liners splitting, there was another option as well on the engine build guy on Chanel 5 screwed studs down the side of the liners in the cooling jackets which was supposed to help but was running close to 6 or 700 bhp can't remember which?
Cheers
I remember watching that also while looking at videos on net at freezing there was a few open deck blocks with that method of bars in the water jackets for extra support being used in motor sport applications.
Personally I think Tim would be the best to ask on this situation as ypu say he's running the sort of power levels dave is wanting to achieve.
Tim has on many occasions tested to destruction with constant track use the weak points of these engines and has just about ironed out all the little fixes there is! Steve also ran 458bhp and had no liner issues for the life span of his car and when it was broken the where no issues found with splitting liners Tim had also shimmed that block!
naa not a liner engineer :) I know when not to comment cos I know nowt about the subject - I know my own limits of knowledge. If people are willing to use their engine to test different methods of reinforcing liners then that's up to them. Pointless arguing about whose method is better without either loads of testing or decent analysis like finite element/CFD/whatever the F1 teams use....not many people have the spare coin for that!! Hoop stress my hoop!
I have given this a great deal of thought & read a lot of opinions & talked to Mr. Williams - I have decided to just shim the B5234T3 block and leave the deck open. Money will be diverted into a SMF/ new clutch arrangement - to reduce the rotational inertia, even though this may slightly reduce driveability - I am already fully committed to have one of the fastest Volvo's in the UK.
I will be using a waterless coolant option this time & seek to get some kind of water/methanol injection.
Credit card is going to get spanked - long & hard this year! But the EURO has strengthened against GBP & with my new day rate secured I think we should be OK. Let the buying commence!!
We're also going with waterless coolant on the 16v builds there's alot of benefits to using it
Glad to hear your going ahead with the build Dave if your after Methanol injection I have a tank which fits under my spear wheel and holds about 13 litres and the pump is hidden in the boot on the rear wheel arch under the liner. I use the AEM progressive system. I have had Devils own but running neat methanol as i do eats plastic internals where as the AEM pump just keeps on trucking all day long.
Have you thought about mapping? for running in you need the fuelling to be spot on. I would discuss this with Shark sooner rather than later to see what they can do? boost needs to be low with a low rev limit and standard ignition position just for running in. As you know if the fuelling is not spot on to start with it will brake down the oil and in a very short space of time leading to bearing failure.
Also have you though anymore about getting another head dipped as the ME7 heads are prone to cracking at times?
Cheers Greg
Are you selling the Meth/Water kit?
I will dip the head if it comes back from testing ok. I suspect from the amount of grey cappuccino in the oil channels that it is unlikely to be good news.
As for mapping Shark would be my 1st choice.
Speaking of good news - this showed up today...

from Germany. It looks to be in pretty good nick.
Plan is to re-bore & hone it & shim it. Dunno if it is worth cryo-dipping.
Must be the day for delivering
This came from Bosnia

Greg - was it this one? http://www.ebay.com/itm/AEM-WATER-ME...item1c39446ae7
Yes thats the pump I have but my control is different and older and the price for my kit was less having a look around I can't see my controller Tim will be able to tell you if that controller is any good or Chris S70 who has the M3 up for grabs might be able to tell if the controller is the same as his?
that`s the one i have dave
Wish me luck the head goes tomorrow to be checked. Fingers crossed it comes back without any bad news.
Good news - I am still alive after 44 years. Better news is that the head came back with no cracks! Been cleaned and faced and is ready to be used on the next evolution.
I cleared down more stuff out of the bay. Still in 2 minds whether to junk the air-con (it still works).
