The base is removed by grabbing the front edge and pulling sharply upwards, it's just held by a pair of clips.
excellent thanks very much wombatbomb. i did notice, whilst looking for bolts, that there was a bit of play in the front lip of the "bench" so i just grab it and pull it shaprly veticall?
Yep, it's a 'heart in the mouth' moment I'm afraid, Volvo built these cars to be solid. ;)
