AFAIK the S/V70R will only run with the ecu from another 'R' (1997/98 ME4.4).
Does anyone know if the ecu from an auto 'R' will work ok in a manual 'R'??

an auto will work in a manual but not the other way around
It's been pointed out to me that the manual R only has one lambda sensor, but the auto R has 2 - so the ECU may well start the car and make it run, but it'll give a fault as it's missing this sensor.
I gather that the regular T5 manual has 2 lambda sensors, so it would most likely be ok for one of those.
The S70R auto is actually just a T5 auto and shares the same ECU. The S70R auto ECU therefore will not work at all in the S70R manual due to the immobilisation (well, at least not in standard form).
