Is that not the original cross hatching finish from honing, measure the ring gap to check for wear.

you haven't dislodged a boost hose possibly, sounds similar to what happen when our v70r awd popped its bottom ic hose off...just a though and I hope it's something simple Rob.

In the later cars Volvo added a vacuum banjo as part of the pcv pipe to fit this I believe. Might well be wrong, it's a working theory.

Yeah this is a very common place to go and very fiddly,goes to the ptc valve
Auto Ecu's are no good for a manual, they don't control the boost as well and boost spike. If you want my opinion get the right one for the car, it will drive better.
have you checked the pipe on the inlet manifold by the thermostat had this on mine and the elbow was broken fitted a temp pipe from inlet manifold to the tree before the turbo intake and alls fine
maybe part of the evap system, does sound like some sort or air leak though
Could be the idle control valve, maybe give it a clean and see if it improves?
I think auto mapped ECUs will work with manual but not the other way around
