Check the glow plug relay , if you're having to turn the key 2-3 times 100% either the relay has gone or you have glowplugs down :-)
Slipped timing belt and bent valves ?
If the problem was purely low compression then easy start would have got it going !

They dont come out well because of the bonding like you say duane , a breaker might be your best bet then at least they have the grief of breakages :)

The flexi hoses may be the cause of the imbalance , they can break down on the inside which forces tiny rubber pieces into the calipers (quite rare but i have known it) :)

Sounds like your turbos shot nath , sounds like the oil thats burning is screwing with your emissions and confusing the ecu on your fuelling ratios .
