  2. Hi Pete,

Unless someone has changed the locking wheel nuts for some really obscure ones find it very unlikely that the trims wouldn't fit on, have the rears got the same locking nuts as the front?

It does seem a shame to change the wheels, it's annoying that they've been lost somewhere down the line.

Here's a link to a breakers in Somerset who has 2 of the same wheels, not sure if he'll part with the centre caps though - perhaps it's worth a try.

    eBay Link

I'd be very surprised if Volvo couldn't get hold of the centre caps. I'd remove one for the part number on the back and give a few different Volvo agents a call, perhaps the Parts Dept. guy couldn't be bothered to search.

When I removed the headlamp washers/wipers, I replaced the headlamp trims with ones without the holes, these were ordered in direct from Sweden via the Volvo dealer.....I'm certain they've got the alloy wheel centre caps.

If you do decide to change the alloys, remember the 850 wheels fitments are:

    Stud Pattern: 5x108
    Offset: 35 to 42
    Centre Bore: 65.1

If your not sure if any particular wheel may fit or not, don't hesitate to put a question up in the 850 section.

    All the Best,

    Steve
  3. Hi Pete,

I always used Castrol Magnatec 10W40 Semi Synthetic due to the mileage - I personally think Fully Synthetic would be too 'thin'.

I changed/flushed the gearbox oil when I bought the car back in 2003/4 ish at 120K and to be honest I didn't think it really needed doing then. Unless the gearbox oil smells 'burnt' it can be left, just be very carefull of the pipe clips that attach to the cooler in the radiator as they can be fragile.

If you fancy changing the wheels to 17" or 18", then personally I'd opt to upgrade the front discs from 280mm to 302mm, you just need to buy larger carriers for the calipers (quite cheap). With larger discs and good quality pads, you'll find she'll stop a bit quicker.

I should imagine the centre caps are available to buy from Volvo, have you tried to remove one for the part number stamped on the back and then give them a ring, I've had a quick search on ebay and there are a couple of sellers selling the complete alloy wheel, perhaps they'd be interested in selling the centre cap seperately.

Thinking back when your brother in law pointed me towards the garage that advertised the car for sale, their pictures showed all 4 centre caps in place (I'm 99% sure). Have you contacted them to ask where they are?

    Cheers,

    Steve
  4. Hi Pete, I sold the car to a gentleman about 3 years ago & I've regretted it ever since. The car was my pride and joy and I would like to think it was exceptionally well cared for.

Regarding the modifications, there was only a few that I did. Obviously it was RICA'd, this transformed the car totally and it was probably the best thing the car had done. I always ensured the car was fuelled with Shell V-Power.

I fitted the strut brace along with all the stainless covers under the bonnet - some people loathe them but I always thought it smartened up a dull engine bay.

I also fitted the CAT back Milltek stainless steel exhaust system, these are now unavailable to buy and personally I think they are the best quality sports exhaust you could buy for the 850. Milltek offered a lifetime warranty on the exhaust too.

I also fitted Goodridge stainless steel braided brake hoses to both front and rear - these should last for the lifetime of the car. I fitted Ferrodo DS2500 pads to both front and rear, although these may have been changed now.

I fitted a Baileys dump valve and also replaced the filter with an ITG air filter, I hope this hasn't been thrown away as ITG are considered to be the best filters on the market. You just clean them off with a special solution so they never need to be changed.

I fitted the Smiths boost gauge and pillar pod, I opted for a mechanical gauge as the bright digital ones you see often dazzle at night time.

I also fitted 4300K HIDs to the headlamps, the ballasts are the small boxes you see just behind each headlamp.

I retro fitted a Pollen Filter (genuine Volvo retrofit kit) which can be found under the plastic scuttle panel on the passenger side.

The wheels that were fitted came from either a S70 or C70, they were virtually unmarked when I fitted them. They are genuine Volvo 'Helios' alloy wheels not cheap aftermarket ones.

Servicing wise, I worked in a garage in Manchester town centre so I personally serviced the car every 10K. I always changed the oil filter with a genuine Volvo or Mann filter ( these have a non return flow unlike other filters) and used Castrol Magnatec oil. The plugs used were NGK Platinum tipped plugs. If I remember correctly, the timing belt and water pump were changed at roughly 140K.

An other modification was the rear wiper was replaced with a wiper arm & blade off a Renault Clio.....shhhhh lol.

The front wiper blades were PIAA Pure Silicon Blades that coat the screen with silicon (similar effect to Rain-X) so the rain just beads off, these cost £50 for a pair!!

The front splitter attached to the bottom of the bumper is off a Renault Laguna....easily removed but I think it looked ok.

The brick shaped mark on the passenger glass was when somebody tried to 'smash & grab' from a set of traffic lights in Manchester. Obviously the Volvo was tougher than the brick, hence the mark. I always thought about replacing the glass but this would mean having it re-tinted again so I never bothered.

The only thing that never worked during my 5 years of owning the car was the heated drivers seat, everything else worked fine and the engine and gearbox never missed a beat.

I hope you thoroughly enjoy the car as much as I did, I really do regret selling her & I think that is the main reason I still visit VPCUK. It's great to see the car is back with the VPCUK family.

    Cheers,

    Steve
