What does 854 and 855 (+ others?) signify?

Seen a few references to volvo 854 and wondered what it meant. Is it a revision/shape thing like bmw e## numbers?

hi stu right here we go all known as 850`s. 854`s are saloons and 855`s are estates just something volvo did to defy the saloon from the estate

it's the 85o series. 5 doors or 4 doors gives the final digit. Estate 855, saloon 854.
