For a few months I've noticed that my torque converter clutch (lock-up) slips and that overdrive (4th on a 4 speed box) also seems to slip once in a while.

I've checked the gear box fluid level, colour & smell. All are OK. No overdrive light yet either. I'd really accepted that I will probably be replacing the box sometime in the near future if the problem gets worse but had a trawl around on the internet this morning looking for ideas.

I found an interesting description of a simalar problem on the Ford Scorpio website and wondered if the same was true for Volvo with respect to the MAF being the cause of the problem:

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/autogearbox.htm

After reading paragraph 2 of the Operating Concerns section I took my MAF out for inspection and found that it is totally blackened inside, even the filaments are sooty black.

I have attempted to clean the MAF as described on the Scorpio site using carb cleaner and immediately the car felt smoother to drive. Certainly I will be replacing the MAF ASAP. Not sure if there is any improvement to the gear box operation yet as I've not been able to test it properly in the confines of the town.

Do any other members have simalar MAF or autobox problems they can share?

It could well affect the gearbox behaviour because the MAF sensor is used by the engine ECU to calculate engine load, and the transmission ECU makes some of it's decisions based on the signals from the engine ECU.

Also check the speed sensor, I just read on the ozbrick forum (admittedly AWD one) and they reckon it fixed it.

Have also heard a similar thing with reference to slipping gears on autos..and it was said that on removal and inspection found the electric solenoid valves inside the G/box were glazed and tarnished with a waxy residue?? A special degreaser/cleaner was used for 100 miles followed by a tranny flush and hey presto...fixed.
