We all know that the stock T5 gives 225 bhp, and 240 bhp when required. But what actually is the trigger for the 30 seconds of extra power? - is it on throttle travel?, or some fandangly thingy in the ECU?, or what?
I'd love to know so I know when to expect it!

i think Fraz is right, didn't they go upto 240 with the introduction of the ME7?

Stock T5's are 255, the T5R have overboost to 240bhp. The ME7's have 240 as standard!

My manual says 225 with 240 for 30 seconds.
I must re-read it sometime...

All 850 T5's were 225 bhp

The 850 T5R and R had 240 and 250 bhp respectively, this was a 30 second overboost controlled by the ecu in top gear conditions permitting.

A standard s/v/c70 pre 99 fly by wire had 240 bhp, the S/V70 R has 250bhp except the auto which has 240.

No T5 has the overboost feature, only the R spec cars.

The later ME7 V70R in laser blue had 265 bhp, but it was AWD.

Standard S60 has 250bhp as do the rest.

Apart from a higher top speed, is it desired to have the overboost coming only in top gear ? Wouldn't everybody want the overboost during acceleration too ? This is for the manual box, I presume, and with the SPORT mode activated ?

The AT Sport mode does nothing to the engine. All it does is hold onto the lower gears for longer and makes kick down more active.

The over boost on the R ecu does and will improve acceleration, early s v c T5 70s were also 240bhp down to them having the 16 t.
Ive read the latest 04 me7 s60 v70 t5s are now 26o bhp so they have gained a further 10 bhp over the original P2s.

I know SAAB do a similar thing, but it is boost related. They adjust the boost depending on ambient temperature. They can handle -10?? to 40 degrees and maintain factory output. Very clever stuff indeed.

What i would like to point out to people is 225 or 240hp is only available once. A RR graph, seen below, has a gradual ascent and then peaks. This is useful cause the more you go up the more power you have, but torque is far more important, as you need the force to push that rev counter up. So i think peak power is by the buy, and torque at the wheels / tonne is probably a good acurate way of bench marking your cars ability !

My manual says 225 with 240 for 30 seconds - in a stock T5 (1996)
- not sure why I would want more than 30 secs on full chat as I should be up to speed by then, but I would love to know how it is controlled.
(New to Volvos', me!)

Some of the chip tuners out there should know definitively I guess?

My question exactly! - Think Justin may have answered it though....!
Unless of course, someone knows different...

Yes, please if im wrong shout up.

I was under the distinct impression that only the R models have the 30 second feature.

The rest i am 100% spot on with....that sounds a bit big headed but then i have owned 5 T5's ;)

Lol - not a dig, just a reminisence of That's Life!

I'll take a pic of relevant page of manual if anyone wants!
