Hi all, me again, ive seen a v70 R on ebay (gold) lovely looking bus, but cos im blonde i need someone to tell me the difference between an R and a t5, its only done 87000 on a 98, the bid at the mo is £3110 he is a dealer so im not to sure any advice??

The R in questions colour is saffron - one of the best and most sought after colours!!
The R is slightly quicker (250bhp) has better suspension, is top spec and above all the "limited edition"
If you can stretch to the asking price I would recommend it over a T5 - purely for resale values as they hold their price better.
Dont be surprised if it goes for over 7k!

I second that. A V70R is a supurb machine. I have had the pleasure of driving around in one with over 160k on the clock and what a peach, and grip levels are awesome. Recomended !

wot do you think of the mileage? he says he has service history!

Do you have a ebay link to it?
Cautionary note.
Be careful of the early AWD versions - as you will need to rotate the tyres. If they get more than 2mm out they nuke :hbomb: their transfer boxes (the bit after the gearbox that makes 'em 4wd) and at £1500 at time it can be an expensive repair. Plus you have the hassle of rotating the tyres every few thousand miles.
Other than that - they are fantastic cars and well worth going for. Saffron Metallic is a great colour if not the best.

I had a quick browse over the the pics and that and it seems a good motor - the bodywork looks impressive and the milage is very low compared to a lot of the R's!!
Go for i'd say - just make sure you geta a chance to go see it before you buy tho because without taking it for a test drive it could be hiding a hundred sins!!
Let us know how you get on!!
Where abouts is the car based - there may be someone on here with a bit of knowledge who could view it for you?

I assume this is the one in question?
I have rung the guy up. He doesn't know if it is AWD or not. He has owned the car 6 days. It is not badged as an AWD.
BTW I am not saying that AWD is necessarily a bad thing. In many ways it is a good thing - more traction in the wet.
If it is still around then I will happily meet you in Wolverhampton to look at it if you want to.

If you look at the list on this one in Glasgow - you will see that the T-box has already been done.

The guy has bought it to sell on - which is OK - so long as it is understood that he personally will know very little about it. Which can work in our favour.

yep thats the one, he is based in wolverhampton which is miles away from me, did he say wot reserve he put on it? does he know its a "special edition"?

I didn't ask. I have just had a phone call and it is front wheel drive only - automatic. I can go and have a look at it tonight for you if you wish?

i had a look at the one in Glasgow, a bit too sporty for my liking, but im realy interested in the saffron.

that would be fantastic, i would be very grateful if a expert eye had a look over it.

He will not have a clue about the Volvo's. Looking through the previous auctions he has sold a Vectra and an Mitsi Evo III.
I suppose they are special edition as an "R".
I would defo get it HPi checked first, as the seller has no idea/will not care particularly where it has come from.
If you are still interested - and I think you should be (assuming everything is straight) - then I am more than happy to go look.
Let me know.
liz owen
Thursday 17th March 2005, 16:48
yeah defo, how do i go about getting it hpi checked?
Wobbly Dave
Thursday 17th March 2005, 16:57
Don't Panic!
First off I could make a call - it would cost me £15 to have it done.
Good News :thewave: Yay!
But me being a smart cookie :insane: have rung the man back and asked him. He states it is HPi clear (and the check was run 6 days ago)
Bad news (boo!)
This car (according to him) is in the Autotrader for £8995. Which is a little over the odds, to be fair. I doubt you'd be able to beat it down much lower than £8500.
Having said that - if you have the money - it sounds like a good idea.

BTW it might be a good idea to let us know what you have in mind, budget wise?

7500 tops is what I'd give for it!!!

1 tip from me, not sure whether everyone will agree, but i would do a cambelt change unless it was changed in the last 20k with proof, and verifcation by phone from the dealer. I would change the oil, filter and transmission fluid, and be prepared to have some tyres fitted and other mics, like balancing etc. if you are stretching your budget to accomadate the car i would try and put £500 a side for and initial "peace of mind" maintainence bill.

Good advice - its always peice of mind to get the cambelt done unless you know for sure that it has been changed already. And putting a bit of cash aside for the stage 0 tune up should ensure you have a happy T5!!

This might be a better deal for you.
2001 - S60 T5 SE Manual with 104K on the clock. Current auction price £2050.
I would expect to pay about 6 for it.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=9872&item=4535996225&rd=1
and the good news there is no reserve (and look at that interior :worship: )
Obviously it is no good if you want an estate
The SE is important. It stands for SExy.

Possibly more in your price range? 118K shouldn't be a problem as long as it has been well looked after.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=9872&item=4536487279&rd=1
And it has all the hall marks of a proper R.

Keep looking Dave!!

It will take time to find a bargain, so it might be worth relaxing some of the criteria for a quick buy. Liz which is most important to you?
liz owen
Thursday 17th March 2005, 17:51
Has to be an estate, has to be V70, has to be top spec with leather, low milage, quickish and here comes my dizzy blonde bit.......has to be light/unusual colour!!!! not asking much hey! Joking aside tho this car will have to last a fair few years, so i want a GOOD car.
Wobbly Dave
Thursday 17th March 2005, 17:54
What is the top end of the budget?
And am I going to Wolverhampton?
liz owen
Thursday 17th March 2005, 17:59
top end budget would have to be no more than 7k, if you think its still worth a look knowing wot he wants for it its entirely up to you, i dont know how low he will go!
Mrsmopp
Thursday 17th March 2005, 18:08
I think you are going to have to pay around the 7K mark for the sort of spec you are after, what do u class as low mileage as everyone's opinion differs when it comes to volvo's??

Me and Mrsmopp talked at some length about this and I sourced other opinions within the motor trade (outside this forum).
The guy is clearly an amateur. I think we would find that he has in fact paid over the odds himself for this car and as such your bottom price will not cover his outlay.
I was flicking through an old copy of the trader (11 feb 2005) in a motor parts place I sometimes go to for odd bits - mostly valeting stuff. Anyway in said mag was exactly the same car as this - in metallic sparkly red with 87K on it and the price was £7850. So the price Tasha said was spot on.
I fear that the difference between what you have to offer (which is about right) and the over the odds sum he has in mind, means it is probabky unlikely that you will get this one. I say ring, offer and see what he says.
I think we may have some more searching to do.
Good news is the new copy of Autotrader is out tomorrow (Friday) - so get out and have a butchers. If you see something you like then let us know.

Hope I'm not sticking my nose in, but the auction for the Saffron V70R is No Reserve, so the guy is leaving himself open to a loss and a bargain could still be had. Having said that, it's currently at over 5 G's already. :wallbash:

No doubt the car is worth shooting for - I am just doubtful that Liz will be successful.

Fair comment. Might be worth noting that the current high bidder has recently won a different car and is bidding on a whole bunch of others, so if he's a trader he'll know what it's worth....? I'll shut up now. :blowingup

No offence intended! I just wanted an excuse to use a smilie! :band:
Loving the forums and looking forward to making a purchase after my holiday.
By the way, this high bidder has bid on 5 cars from the *same* seller. Suspicious? Probably not. Hope Liz finds the right car for her.
