I have a chance at a T5 estate on an N plate in dark met blue with a shot bottom end...caused by oil starvation apparently. The asking is a grand. Its at a local mechanics who doesnt want the repair job.
What do you think about the likelihood of sourcing a good s/h engine at reasonable price or repairing the existing one. Would I end up with a good car at the end of it or just a money pit and lots of heartache?

You can buy a brand new engine from Volvo for just over 2K. Salvo will be the best source for a s/h engine. Just a question of time, money and energy to do the job.

Personally by the time you have sourced a 2nd hand engine or a new one - you may have well bought a gooden to start with.

I would buy the car if only to break it for parts.

Revise that

I would only buy that car to break it for bits.

Personally I think that a grand isn't that good a deal by the time you have spent money on the new engine (and whatever else needs doing once you have got it up and running)

For 2.5k (sometimes less) you can buy a decent saloon and around the 3-4 mark a really good estate.
