Are you sure you want to part Ex for a mondeo, A standard T5 will wip a mondeo and is much more nicely put together!
Mondeo V6 does sound nice and feel quick but wont to much to worry a T5!

Thanks Nat...
Not yet Bracer...
And Lance, It's all down to money and costs.... (and towing a boat! me and a mate are buying a speedboat, so money going on that too!)
Also, I havent checked, but last time I looked a TURBO'd car had a much lower towing capacity than a non turbo....
Does anyone know the weight a T5 can pull please? (blimey does that make me sound REALLY OLD!!!)
I'm still struggling to find what car to have.
I've had fast cars (Rover 800 Vitesse - honest it WAS quick!!, CRX VTEC, Cav GSi with 200hp, Nissan 300ZX) and I'm sure you're dead right about the T5 taking the ST, so I'm not really too fussed about going VERY fast, just quick would be OK for now
I still like the exterior looks of the T5 estate, though not too sure about the inside. Sure the inside of a MUNDENO isnt great.
OH I DUNNO!!!
I've never been like this before with a car..... whats wrong with me! definately getting old..... hehehe

Towing capabilities is about kerb side weight, suspension and torque.
T5 has all of these qualities in bucket loads. Most of the estates, if not all, come with self-levelers on the back, namely nivomat shocks. T5's have more than enough wallop to get your speedboat moving. I might be wrong but I think the wiring for the tow bar is already lurking around the back end, so fitting is simple.
Mondeo's are not built to last. I think if you buy one you will only be heading for disappointment.

oh bugger... WELL DONE DAVE.... now I dont know where I'm going AGAIN - and even more confused ! LOL
(my rover vitess was a heavy old tank, and that had a much lower towing capacity than a non tubo 2.0litre... wonder why)
Can someone remind me of the expected MPG figs of a STANDARD T5 please, and then I'll halve that for towing!!
Thanks

I looked at the advice that VOSA gives on towing
To ensure that your vehicle is not overloaded
you should:
• Know the weight and weight limit of your vehicle. The maximum
permitted axle weight and Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) can be found
on a plate which is usually located in the vehicle cabin, under the
bonnet, or on the chassis of trailers;
• Be careful not to mix up the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) with
the Gross Train Weight (GTW). The GVW is the maximum
permitted weight of the vehicle (plus any load it is carrying), while the
GTW is the maximum permitted weight of the vehicle plus any trailer
being towed (plus any load being carried in the vehicle and trailer);
• Remember that the GVW includes the weight of the vehicle,
driver, load and any passengers. Also allow for the weights of any
pallets or packing cases;
• Ensure the load is distributed appropriately to avoid overloading
axles. After any drop-offs, re-check the distribution of the remaining
load;
• Ensure the GVW is checked before setting out using an in-house
or public weighbridge. While public weighbridges can be used to
obtain accurate GVWs, in some cases the approach and exit paths
are not sufficiently flat or level to give accurate results for axle weight,
which should if possible be checked using an in-house weighbridge;
• Never automatically trust declared weights, invoices or
delivery notes given to you by customers. Remember that you
and your employer hold the responsibility for not overloading, not the
customer.
to steer and take longer to stop. It is also illegal. VOSA employees,
trading standards officers and police officers carry out random checks at
the roadside to enforce overloading regulations.

I will have a look for these GVW details etc on the T5 and get back to you.
The other thing you have to consider is that you will not be towing all the time? So may as well have something half decent to knock about in.

I was not trying to infer that you might be heading that way :rolleyes:
I would like to state that it will be a cold day in hell before a tow bar gets anywhere near being installed on my Volvo :B_steerin

I know that, just made me laugh.....
My wife says if I get a Volvo, she'll NEVER get in it.... cos they're all driven by codgers!!
I tried to explain that there are some out there (possibly) as quick as my ZX but she wasnt having any of it

Apparently people we are now all officially old codgers :pants: .
Thanks (to your missus steve) :remybussi
I suppose at 33 I am kinda (justified) & ancient.
I am happy to provide evidence to the contrary. (about the cars at least)

Had a little thought, yes a T5 had buckets of torque, but to get the boat moving, you will be dialing in 3K to get that torque. Diesels produce their torque much lower down (as we all know) so you dont need to fry the cluch when pulling off on a hill.
Sounds almost reasonable to me but that does not mean I am right
BTW, TOOOOOO many smileys :rainfro:

thats what I'm thinking, and you are right.
Though according to the PipeSmokers website link as provided by Dave, the Volvo was voted Tow Car of the Year 1945 !! ok, maybe not that far back!!
but I guess that wasnt a tuned T5 turbo though...
So a nice Mondeo V6 with 220nm of torque at 2000rpm will get the whole lot moving along without any trouble...
(And I thought that about the smileys... but STILL not a Thumbs Up one though!!)
