View Full Version : Protect your Automatic Transmission

After much development work I can now offer an installed "after cooler" system for 850/S70/V70 (phase 1) Automatic transmissions.
It is my firm belief that this system will help extend the life of the ATF and your box. It works by providing additional cooling to the ATF which I feel is prominent and necessary for tuned cars, to help with the additional workload put on this crucial fluid. It is recommended by Volvo, that additional cooling is added for towing or excessive use - e.g. use as a Taxi. So for piece of mind I think it is a worthwhile investment and comes at a fraction of the cost of an AT recon.
The system constitutes a 13 row pressed plate aluminium cooler and braided pressure hoses and fits inline after the stock cooler. The hoses are good to temps in excess of 400 degrees centigrade.
KIT NO LONGER AVAILABLE THROUGH ME...

Dave, just like to say Nice work !
Now how easy can you knock up a set of pipe work for it to work as an Aditional Engine Oil Cooler ?

I don't think it would be that difficult. The main issues are working out the lengths and deciding where to join it into the existing system. I have to confess that I know little about where the oil coolant system goes (currently)
I would be happy to investigate and develop an additional oil coolant if there proves to be enough interest.

Nice one Dave, I think a inline design after the stock cooler would work a treat

Shouldn't the title read...
"Protect your automatic transmission by not power braking" ;)

For the auto trans, the torque converter will have no problem pumping the extra fluid around an additional cooler but is the engine's oil pump strong enough to move extra liquid into bigger recess ? Would this action deprive the needed oil pressure going to the turbo bearing ?
Off-Topic : Has anyone tried fixing oil injectors to the cam areas to lubricate the cams better at higher RPMs ? This can be found on older (or newer) GSX-R.

The pump is more than up to the job, and as for the cam tray well it Practically submersed in oil at high rpm's so no need for extra feeds there :B_steerin

I don't mind really. I would find it easier if you came here. I can travel to you but you'd have to cover my travelling costs. Fitting should take about an hour, 2 at the very outside.

Ideally you'd come to me and I'd cover costs - simply cos I've a young family and jumping ship for the day would not go down well especially at weekends.

Teflon line braided hoses - the top jollies. Better spec than the volvo originals. Good to 400 degrees and they look cool too!

Hi Dave
I have an autotrans and am considering your cooler, do you have any pictures of one installed?
Cheers

Forgive my ignorance, what is "power braking"?
Wobbly Dave
Tuesday 26th July 2005, 13:44
Power braking in an automatic is using the left foot to hold the brake on whilst raising power in the engine/turbo by raising the revs. It preloads the transmission and I broke my first box doing it too often. It burnt the clutches and the box gave up.

Shame I have only just seen this otherwise I would have asked you to take a look into fitting one of these on my car.

When could we meet up and get it done then mate?
Hopefully it would be a nicer day next time.
I would appreciate a good pair of eyes over my car, especially now as you've seen the CV boot was ripped etc.
I haven't the foggiest about cars to be honest, so any help is always a godsend.

If you are serious then I can order the parts and do the install the weekend after next Saturday (21st Jan). The bits are not cheap. I will sort out a price if you want it done.

I am unfortunately working that weekend.
I'm available at the weekend on these dates:
18th & 19th February
25th & 26th February
Aternoon of 4th March and all day 5th March
I work shifts of 4 days on, 4 days off, so it takes me a while before I come off weekends once I start them.

The guy has got very good feedback and I think you add this to a gearbox without flushing it.
