Hi all, have owned an 850 gle T5 for a year now. Its covered 195000 miles.
Have had no probs with the car untill today...dont no whether this noise has always been there, or should be threre, but there is a tap tap tap tap coming from the engine.around the area of the oil cap.
Any help would be appreciated..

Have you checked the oil level or have you recently replaced the oil ?

Most likely a sticking valve lifter.

What grade oil did you use to top it up ?
wasn't 5w-40 per chance was it ?

No it was 10w-40

Often the cold weather effects the thinner oils - this problem is often reported early morning or later in the evening as your using 10w-40 though it should be ok. Perhaps Adam is right then.

Adam, will the valve lifter be found under the plate held down with about 10 star shaped screws? behind the oil cap??

A bit deeper than that I'm afraid. They reside under the camshafts and cost a fair few £'s each...not figuring in the other material costs and labour involved to replace them.

you could try an engine flush and oil change. it wouldnt hurt. use a decent flush. wurth is good.

mine has been flushed
and the oil changed about 4 times in the last few 1000 miles due to various work being done...
not made a blind bit of difference :(

could be that your cam followers are dirty, you can get an addative you add to the oil that cleans and frees them up. Or the followers could be worn, you would have to take them out and messure them with some calipers, they should be 31.959mm - 32.025mm in diameter and 25.500mm - 26.500mm in height, if they are they cost £9.20 each ish (20x9.20+vat)=£216.20.

Or you camshafts could be worn and at £236 each ish (2x236+vat)=£554.60 it starts to get expensive....

All doom and gloom i'm afraid if you have a problem with the valve gear and/or hydrolic followers and camshafts.... cheaper to get a reconditioned head...Depends how picky you are.

They can do. But it's really difficult to tell sometimes.

just as an afterthought the followers can become noisy if you have low oil pressure, would be worth checking that before spending loads a dosh...

Cannot remember of top of my head what it should be???
