People always say the 850 T5 engine is good for well over 200,000 miles. VOC have their highest 850 T5 registered at 200k, and I think a few here have done 220-230k.

What realistically can we (people who drive our cars as opposed to pootle) expect from them given most of us service oil at 5k intervals and all? What's the main killer of the engine - the engine itself or some peripheral breaking like the radiator causing a head gasket?

I think it would be useful to start a list of models and their mileages and show when what parts broke. Mine would be:

Nreg 855 T5 - 70k clutch - 140k gearbox - 160k clutch - 180k calipers

Anyone else think it might be worth doing? Comments on the engine life welcome!

Mines showing 157k and uses very little oil last 1000 miles not a drop. It had its original clutch replaced at 143k and a refurbed turbo at around 150k although it was still holding 1 bar I wanted more!

Ive seen a minging 850 t5 with 298k on the clock. Ive heard of one on 469k having had the gearbox replaced twice.

Theres a guy in Notts with a P1 V70 T5 on 229k+ with MBC still on the original clutch he bought it as an ex demo.

I think its only a matter of time till we see 500k T5!
Im sure Ive seen one in the VOC HIGH Miles club with 450K in the states.

Mine has 210k on the clock and ran a 102mph through the quater in 14.1 seconds. It now has a fair bit more topend than when i ran that time ;).Its all to do with how you look after the engine and how it was looked after before you owned it.Sorting the exhaust system before you up the boost has alot to do with how long the motor lasts, keeping the egt's low.The car gets used hard aswell.

:B_steerin apart from a slippy clutch on full boost in 4/5 mine has done 150k now and is running a dream...gearbox turbo and engine are excellent, bodywork has no rust at all, maybe thats a fvsh for you.....

Mines on 184k and uses no oil at all, had to have the head replaced at about 170k due to warping, other than that it runs like a swiss watch!.

Just coming up to 200K and still going strong (touch wood). If I was ultra critical there may just be a bit of a top-end tappety noise that wasn't there before, but doesn't seem to use excesive oil since I reverted to semi synth from Mobil 1 when consumption was high.
all wear and tear problems as others ABS unit/ Alarm remote/ tailgate rattle, coil pack, treat tyres as a consumable otherwise top motor.

I couldn't get one off Volvo. You'll have to look to aftermarket. http://www.partsforvolvosonline.com/product_info.php?cPath=104_557&products_id=2784

When I got my T5, I thought the rectangular end looked a bit tired so I took it off and it fell apart literally in my hands. Volvo do the oval replacement for it for less than £20 (they sell on eBay for more!) and with Marshall Volvo being nice, probably less now. IMHO the oval makes it look to a keen eye as being a bit beefy, but I still preferred the rectangular's style (matches the 850!)

121k is unusual, although low miles isnt necessarily a good thing on an old 850 as lack of use causes gaskets and rubber seals to perish meaning when you can start to use a lot of oil etc.
Also a car thats done low miles because of short journeys could be in much worse condition from never getting warmed up than one thats done intergalatic miles.
