I'm having 'issues' with the clutch on my S70 T5 (1997).

It sometimes makes a whining/moaning sound when setting off in 1st gear.

Apparently its the release bearing, which, after a bit of reading, I've found out that there's differeing opinions on this;

1. "It needs to be replaced ASAP"

2. "It just needs replacing whenever the clutch needs replacing"

Thoughts people.....

Cheers

Joe :)

P.S, should the clutch need replacing, I understand that I should replace every other part too, but just a couple of queries;

Q1. Is it worthwhile fitting an uprated clutch while i'm at it? (any reccomendations?)

Q2. Can anyone reccomend a decent independant garage that will undertake the work (preferebly in NW England).

Q3. How much am I looking at? Around the 500 mark??

Joe,

There's a Volvo independant in Blackpool called jumpleads but I don't know what they're like. Alternatively, Roger Greenbank in Kendal used to work for Volvo, sadly the dealership is now Peugeot...

I can't offer technical advice other than if it's noisy it's buggered....

A wiser member will be along shortly no doubt!

Ok cheers people!

So while we're on the subject, what are the thoughts (if any!) on uprated clutched for an S70 T5?

Thanks,

Joe :)

My mate's C70 has had a groaning clutch release bearing for about 16000 miles now.. He's waiting until the clutch itself needs replacing and hasn't had any ill effects as a result.

Obviously, his is not your car...

Replace the clutch when it starts to slip. The noise should go at the same time. Until then it seems a common fault.

850R is supposed to have a thicker clutch plate and is a little more expensive than a standard t5 clutch. But other than standard you have Spec clutches, from what ive read, you should only touch them if you have a normal style flywheel. Unless your going big power then theres no need for an uprated one.

I'm guessing the standard clutch is designed to take more power as failsafe measure. Mines got the RICA 280 and the clutch hasn't complained once, the big bhp boys like spesh might help out with uprated clutch advice or VT...

im a bit late on this thread but just reading up looking for an answer to something ODD ive found in my bellhousing (ooh-err,missus!) ive noticed that the T5 gearbox housing is fully sealed,ie doesnt have any way of venting the dust generated from normal wear of the clutch.the dust builds up on the flywheel and pressure plate and will result in a resonating(squawking parrot!) noise when pulling away but will have no effect on the operation of the clutch.
this was a common fault on fwd escorts back in the day and we used to fix this by taking the tin plate off the bottom of the bell housing and blowing all the dust out with an airline (and a breathing mask!!)
unfortunately there isnt a big vent hole on a T5 so squawking it will have to be!!
so why has my crankshaft got a spigot bearing in it?? there shouldnt be one as theyre not needed on fwd motors............hmmmmmmmmmm?

Yeah that sounds like a good explanation, cheers mate!
