View Full Version : Front grill

Thinking about either:
- Chopping out the crome plastic uprights in the front grill and backing the volvo diagonal with fine black mesh, or
- Painting / spraying the crome bits black.

Worries:
- Would like to install mesh behind all of the openings in the front, but think cutting the plastic will leave a bad finish.
- Don't think the spray will take very well to the shiny surface.

Has anyone else done this before, who has any tips? Promise not to copy-cat.

I wanted to change the grill on SAM but have had a hard time deciding which one to go for.

So I decided to see what both would look like.

Option 1 (As is)

Are we talking 850 grill?, if so I've done exactly what your suggesting to mine. better off using a hand saw or jig saw to cut the fins out of the grill. Anything else just melts the plastic and doesnt work very well. Cut along one edge of the fins, then bend them over and they will break off at the other end. Don't forget to leave yourself somewhere to glue the mesh on with afterwards.

The plastic vents at the bottom of the bumper can be done as well, there is a thick border around the edge of the grills, leave this in place and cut out the fins. Neaten up the edges and glue your mesh in from the rear( I used a hot glue gun).Once done just clip them back into place. I did think about just replacing all the plastic with mesh but I didn;t think it would look right.

If you have any questions let me know I've done a couple now, they're a pain in the a*se but worth it in the end.

I bought an aftermarket grill off ebay Then I painted the mesh with chrome paint, added a slash from a S40 and a little R badge

Just trying to share the love. :hidesbehi

and it aint really spam is it?

An inappropriate attempt to use a mailing list, or USENET or other networked communications facility as if it was a broadcast medium by sending the same message to a large number of people who didn't ask for it. Mass junk E-mail.

Looks like I opened a can of worms there... Oops!!

Thanks for info people. I added mesh on my Rover, but am dubious to start cutting plastic bits as these things can easily get out of hand (trim a bit off the left, right, left 'till nothing remains!). Will probably rough it up and spray it matt black.

Never been a big fan of chrome really - wouldn't make a very good double-'ard-bling-gangsta-rappa!

Yes the chrome doesn't look too good,But the black mesh is very nice. The badge sets it off nicely too.

Well that's all very well for the 850 front grille, but what am I going to put on the front of my V70? Of course... C70 egg crate!

Has anyone seen these online? I want to swap out the grille and change the light lenses to the clear variety fitted to late model C70s, so I'm after the lot, so far my local dealer is the only place I've found them and thier prices aren't too freindly...

Get em ! you know it's worth it ! I have pics of both on my website (click my signiture)

What a difference!

How much did you pay for those parts Chris? Euro Car Parts list C70 lenses, but only do "up to 12/2002", so not the clear ones then! Did you just have to change the lens or is it a complete assembly?

My V70 is metallic red, so I think it'll really suit the facelift...

Hmm... Wonder if I can get my hands on a V70R front bumper too?

I paid too much, but got the parts from Nordic as they are local.

I was left with little change from £500, but the difference is worth it, imo. Few days later, I got a stone chip through a lense though! been waiting for a new lense for months.

Er, yeah, maybe I'll just keep it standard for now...
