My hand brake sticks on now and then and releases with a HUGE clunk.
Now, are these the mini drum type, or is the hand brake run from the calipers and pads???
Anyone pulled their rear brakes apart for a good clean????? Easy or Not???

Cheers

They dont have drums but it is a seperate set up than the caliper and pads. The handbrake shoes lock onto the outside of ???. Not sure what its called.

Brake shoes operate on the inside drum part of the brake disc, usually need little maintenance. You will ned to remove the rear callipers and the brake discs to get at them though. One thing to try, mine did the same thing, but stopped it by holding the car on the foot brake releasing the handbrake, then putting it to gear and setting of(mines an auto), as apposed to holding it on the handbrake from start, sounds crazy but stopped the clunk :B_steerin

Cheers for that, but I wanna know why its sticking in the 1st place. Hope its not a leaky piston or something :( Plus, I think the handbrake is inop on the near side :slap:

If its same system as mine it is not related to the calliper, seperate shoes operated by cable. If not working on one side probably cable. The clunking is the shoes releasing as the wheels start to rotate.

Hmmmm, wonder why there sticking. All's I can think of is my old Escorts, when the little piston rubbers used to leak onto the shoes, and then the shoes grabbed the drums :slap: OH well, I feel the need for a bit of DIY :)

hi,
i had the same problem with a clunk, turned out on one of the handbrake shoes the friction material had completly broken away from the rest of the shoe!

Make sure you don't loose the little springs which set the tension and gap on the shoes.

You may end up having to buy a fitting kit.

My S70 clunked once and it was the same problem as paul. A new set of handbrake shoes from ECP (£25 ish) sorted that and a mate fitted them for me.
