speedo top speed

hi ,how come some t5's have 160 mph on the clock while others 150. just wondered. thanks

I think the 850's officially have a top speed of 149 mph but cant remember so they could have the 150 speedo whilst the newer cars have a top speed of 155mph so will have the 160 speedo.

Sounda about right to me its definately the 850s with 150mph and the s/v's with 160 mph

Phase 1 850's have 150mph speedo. (1993-1995)

Phase 2 850's have 160mph speedo (1995-1997)

American 850's have 140mph speedo.

S/V/C70's have 160mph speedo. (1996/7 onwards)

My N reg 855 has 160. Not an R edition, just T5.

See my post above, 850R's are Phase 2 cars and have the 160mph speedo, whereas T5R's are (usually) Phase 1 850's and have 150mph, although there will be some discrepancies where the speedos have been changed etc...

Really....well my 1996 850 T5 has 160 on the clock.
Its a year thing, nothing to do with the model. :)

Yeh, the Phase 2 850's have the coin holder over the OBDII socket (rather than under the bonnet diagnostics), a 160mph speedo, the ABS pump/ECU is different... and thats all I can think of off the top of my head. We have one of each!

There was indeed, all the little niggly faults and flat switches that you find on phase 1's were sorted out and replaced with more ergonomic switches. Best to go for the phase 2's if yer looking for an 850 specifically. IMO.

Thats a REALLY early phase 1, like 1993 - mid 1994!

They have the reverse IC setup too.

Basically, if you want to be really precise, there is:-


Phase 1 - 1993-mid '94
Phase 1.5 - mid '94 - mid/late '95
Phase 2 - mid/late '95 onwards

The phase 1's have the square switches and reverse IC setup

The phase 1.5 replaces this with the different IC piping and ergonomic switches

Phase 2 keeps these but changes the layout of the ABS Pump/ECU, adds OBDII diagnostics and a coinholder as well as a 160mph speedo and a different turbo outlet :)


In addition, the very first 850's had horrid front bumpers and massive headlights (like the 900 series), but I dont think any of the T5's came like this, the only one is MrsMopps white one which has obviously had a replacement front bumper at some point in its life!

To help clarify phase 1/phase 2 850`s if you ring your dealer they will be able to tell your if it is a 1 or 2 but they are not called phase 1/2 by dealers we know them as alter1 and alter2 dont ask me why but thats how they work it out alter>1995 square fog light bumper alter2 round fog light bumper with slight chin spoiler
