Some question son engine mounts;
1) How many are there, and how much do they cost in time and money?
2) How do you know which one has gone and does it add up to more excessive torque steer than normal?
3) What does the top mount exactly do? Why is that some people moan about the vibration of powerflex uprated ones.

Many thanks in advance

There are three or four I think. One on the top and then two or three underneath.

Time and money - I don't know. (Oh poop, that reminds me, I still owe someone for mine! Best get on to them) I changed my top one which was a pig to do because the support arm gets in the way. The fact that the powerflex one comes in two pieces helps though.

Look at them and prod them or try to lift the engine slightly with a jeck. If they're shot you'll be able to see / feel it. The top is the most likely to go. Look into it from the side - you'll see the split.

When I changed mine torque steer was somewhat reduced yes.

It stops the enging moving too much. It needs a bit of movement but not so much that it's flapping about all over the place under the bonnet.

Powerflex ones, being more solid, do transmit more vibration and noise into the cabin yes. It was really noticeable at first but I got used to it. Besides. I like to hear the engine. I don't think fast cars should be silent.

There are two different top mounts BTW. a Pre '99 and a '99 on. Choose carefully - it's easy to get 'em confused.

Easy way of seeing if you have an engine mounting gone is start the engine, put it into first gear, foot on brake and let the clutch in and out to take up drive, obviously not enough to stall the engine. This will load up the mounts and with someone checking them in the engine bay, you will quickly see if any have undue movement. Safety note, while doing this do not stand in front of the car, keep brakes firmly on, best way I have found to do a quick check. I personally found top poly bush to noisey and took it off mine, S70 auto.

Same procedure, foot on brake and go between drive and reverse, instantly shows up any excess movement.

I will get my mate to look under the bonnet and do that , but when I am parking, only happens slightly with reverse not forwards. So if I go from 'drive' to 'neutral' wait then 'reverse' it does a slight thump, sometimes nothing, its better at cold. Is that the gearbox or the engine mount??????

A mate says he gets that with a chrysler 300c and they are brand new!

If you do not see anything, have you changed the auto fluid or know if it has been changed. My S70 had 103,000 with history when I bought it and you would not believe the difference it made. Engages drive smoother, upchanges smoother and to be honest could not see a lot wrong with the fluid that came out, so might be worth going down this route if you cannot see much wrong with the mounts.

John.

Just had the fluid flushed all the way through last friday as it was starting to go brownish, but no burning smell. The AT specialist said it was changing fine but did acknowledge the slight thump in reverse and occasionally shifting up 1st to 2nd in slow traffic. but otherwise it changes perfectly at any other speed.
I hope the box isn't f***ed! Maybe I am just paraniod. Took it for a big burn last night and it scared it me but changed perfectly every gear! Is there an AT ECU or something that needs to be reset?

To be honest sounds like nothing to worry about, sometimes on mine on light throttle change can be a little hesitant as if not sure what gear to be in. I would just check the mounts for the noise when engaging reverse and if you find nothing leave it at that and let it develop as they say.

There are 4 mounts in total - 1 on the front cross member of the subframe - two on the rear cross member and 1 top mount.

Thankyou my wobbly one. Any idea on how many spanners or time scale? Are the mounts expensive? I have noticed a bit more vibration through the cabin from the engine mostly felt through the steering wheel.

I will do mate. They do need rebalancing after various ££££e kerbs in my area! I have yet to find one in line!

I am only saying so that we start with the obvious first. 9 out of 10 times I'd say steering wheel vibration is caused by tyres/tracking/balancing???
