I have a set of Volans that I can't get around to painting so I'm considering getting them powder coated. Has anybody had this done on these wheels and if you have what sort of finish did you get?, is the colour similar?.

Cheers Tc

Anyone used these before? Any other places around Birmingham that can refurb 4 alloys in a day?

I would say powder coat is a very good finish from my experience in the bike world

prolly cost 3-50 a wheel if they are stripped already i have contacts for dip stripping and powdercoating

This place has quoted me £25 per wheel including stripping them.

ER...didnt ask. They're not on the car and have no tyres fitted yet though so it doesnt matter either way to me.

In my bike days always had things powder coated much nicer finish and more robust than ordinary paint.

Yeah thats what I thought after I found two of the wheels I'd freshley painted had gotten chipped whilst being knocked around in the back of my new car!.

Recently had my Tritons refurbed with them in Hi-Power silver, well pleased with the result as the outer steel rims on mine were very corroded. Wasn't cheap tho as I had to book the entire car in for stripping and refitting. I would recommend paying them a quick visit as they have wheels on display in the various finishes which gives a better idea than the pics on the website, for example, the black chrome is much darker than the website picture.

My white wheels were powder coated by a local company to me... "Celtic coatings" at £35 inc per wheel. They are an engineering shop and don't specialise in wheels so they only shot-blast and coat. Any repairs have to be done else where... They are nice people and can recommend the finish. I've got engine bits with them now...

Also the coating is quite thick. An ATS dealer fitted two of my tyres and scuffed both of they (WA*KERS!!!!!)... and they are really easy to clean. Brake dust doesn't stick...I dry wipe mine regularly...

Although if you want a specific colour that they don't hold is stock you'll need to add £100 to the price as they have to order a specific quantity in to justify.....

Nice job mate, but being on the sump won't it keep the heat in?

Sump shouldn't be a problem..... we've got an oil cooler on T5's to cope with that...

A new oil cooler maybe an upgrade for the future though....

Dropped my wheels off today at the powder coaters, I had a bit of trouble with the paint code though. I told him it was 932 Anthracite but he rang later to say that's not a Volvo paint code, I tried ringing Volvo themselves who just said that they dont have a paint code for the wheels!!. I should have them back in a day or two(provided they manage to get the right colour), so I'll post results when I get them.

He did ask me if I wanted something fancy like the chrome illusion coating they can do, anyone fancy a set of chromed Volans??

TOMCAT - I was warned today that freshly powder coated wheels are quite soft and are prone to scuffing when the Tyres are fitted. The chap from Demon Tweeks said, "Make sure that you warn the company that the coating is new so that they take as much care as possible..." also he did say that If Demon Tweeks get wheels that have just been coated they WILL NOT guarantee against scuffing....

Also he was a S60 T5 SE driver....

I agreee with the Judge here i thinkk you need to leave them a day or two before fitting the tyres.

Cheers guys, I'll bear that in mind when I get them.

I've been to pick the wheels up today as they said they where ready, the guy couldnt get the right colour to do them Anthracite so I said get as close a match as you can........

I picked them up today and they're grey alright, but more like they've been primered and then laqured, they look like a metalic primer finish, its not even nice. Not only that but all the scratches I repaired are back, the coating is all bubbled up in a few places where its reacted or been over cooked...,

I'm absolutely gutted, I can't even bring myself to photograph them, they're that bad. I'm now £100 down as the ££££££££ wouldn't release them without payment and I'm worse off now than I was before, at least when I painted them they where the right bleedin colour!!!.Why cant anything go right?.

Can you bring them next week...?
I'll bring a white wheel for you to compare for finish.
I'm getting a quite good discount from the coaters that I've been using - Celtic Coatings.

There currently coating the strut brace from RandomGuy's Primera...

The youngest partner is into performance/modifications and I get the impression he is very competent and very keen to do a good job.

He's never over estimated any of the jobs and so far i've not been disapointed at all..

The down side is if you want a proper colour match like the Volvo one, there is a £100 surcharge to buy the paint in specially. Also I'd need a paint chip to match up cos Powder coating colours are from a different range (I think).

Sigh....ok I've taken some photos of them and well, see what you think. the lightings not great so its making them look darker than they really are.

They are pretty bad mate thats unfortunate but you never know what sort of job people do until they have done it.
