Hi all just to let you know that i changed my normal manual gearshift to the spaceball type as i think they are loads better and finish the interior of nicely.

the reason for this post is to confirm it can be done for all you interested in doing it has 2 volvo breakers said it cannot be done..

costs::::
all parts for conversion £40 +vat from salvo(sent me more parts than i needed i.e all linkage cables etc..

parts need to convert::::
gearstick and housing and trim surround

im going to do a breakdown of work to be done to complete the job which took me 30 mins to 1 hour if any body wants them
1. remove the centre console(pain)
2 remove the 4 13ml bolts holding the gearshift bracket/housing to the floor
3 then remove the clip from the end of the visible linkage cable and move it to one side.
4 with a small screwdriver (gentle)remove the cable from the main housing of the bracket theres a clip built in to the linkage cable so youll just have to try not to break the clip as you prize off the cable from the housing.
5 then on the drivers side theres a hole in the bracket/housing so you can remove the clip holding on the second cable under the gearstick.then when this ones disconnected you need to prize off that cable from the housing as above
6 then just feed out the housing complete with gearstick etc.
7 then insert your new housing and put the cables back on with the clips, bolt the housing down,stick your centre console back on and then click the spaceball on to your existing centre console(mounting are there) and then put her back together
bobs your uncle youve done it .
its a nice movement on the spaceball not notchy like a normal shift and looks cool

judgeninja he's fitted the spaceball gear knob.

(the one with no gaitor, the stick slides about on the base, looks better, but no real advantage), ok, just found a picture:

and spesh, i remember you priced the parts up from me ages ago, but wasn't it something stupid from the dealers buying all the parts required from new (im talking high hundreds i think!). never heard of it being done on a 850 before, buts that not to say it cant be done? i really dont know though sorry

cheers.....well explained....that's what i thought it was.. It's a purely cosmetic thing. For a minute I did think that it may have been a short shift or something........ not 100% sure if it would suit a 850...

Even without the pics I say well done and cheers for the info. Lets see if someone else can do it and take some shots. Regardless - nice write up.

Thats brilliant, well done! :) I tried to do that when I had my S60 D5, but the dealer told me it couldn't be done.

its smooth as a baby bottom to change gear ohh yes serious improvement over the standard shift its like a big ball joint underneath the centre console

as in 850 conversion youve got no chance whatsoever (promise)
as the top trim is ali and complete and will only go on s60/v70

im selling or trying to for the laugh the part i took out so you have the idea on what wants changing
i will get some more pics when i get chance so you can post them for me
see how i put fit by a specialist on the listing(i consider myself a specialist cause i did it)
thanks boys and girls
