Some of you have probably read my posts on my knackered engine. Well, I took it to an Engine Repair specialist tonight, and he doesnt seem to think its anything to do with the cam, as the last mechanic said. He thinks it sounds like its possibly a simple job (fingers crossed) but he's never heard anything like it before! He said its just possibly a loose sparkplug and ancillary, well I hope so.
I've attached a link to a video of the engine sounding crap incase someone else has had the same issue.

Mad! Sounds like a tractor ;)

Will keep ya posted, and thanks again to all the people who offered to help on the other threads :)

Me too mate! After driving her for the 1st time in six weeks, I realised just how much I've missed her! I reckon the alloys may STILL have to go, but Id try and replace them with used Comets ;)

having said that it sounds top endy possibly head related....

Have you tried the mechanics stethascope to locate it.....used this loads to locate probs when I was in the trade many years ago!!

Long screwdriver...stick the blunt end in your ear and poke the sharp end on the engine at strategic points..... surprising what you find with it....

Liddo mate, sorry your car is still sick, assuming your engine is on idle in the video (850rpm) then ask yourself is the knocking noise at half that that speed. The cams run at half engine speed, can you count 425 knocks a minute?

Sorry if this sounds patronising but the lack of response to your original query only indicates how hard it can be to diagnose engine noises, as you can no doubt confirm having taken your problem to various experts for advice.

My opinion? Take the offers and guidance given by the known forum members.

Having said that, I think it’s a cam or auxiliary pulley knock. If not, then feel free to shoot me down.

Been there, done that ;) Its deffo in the head somewhere, but when the guy said it could be a loose spark plug, it made sense i suppose, but then, I'd of thought i'd of got a misfire! I'll be gutted if it is just a loose plug :slap:

Lots of ticks every second i'd say ;) , and it rises and falls with the rev's!

auxiliary pulley knock??? The belt was change 4k ago! The guy asked me that as soon as he heard it, and took the cambelt cover off, but he couldnt find anything obvious.

So it still sounds expensive :slap:

Hope you managed to get her sorted Liddo, I know there's nothing worse than engine trouble. I had to have the head gaskette done abour two years ago, should have cost me about £200, ended up needing a replacement head as well, the total bill was well over £600!.

If you need any help with anything let me know, I'm only in Wigan.

No probs, while I'm thinking about it there's supposed to be a really good Volvo garage(not a dealer) in Bryn(near Ashton) which isnt that far away from you. They're all ex dealer mechanics, if your interested let me know and I'll find out their number for you, they also have loan cars too I think.

Update:

The mechanic has had ALL the belts off, and couldnt replicate the noise.
Checked all the plugs etc etc
Took off the cam cover, and found all the hydrolic tappets to be fine!!!

He's going to take the sump off and have a look at the bottom end this afternoon.

He's completely puzzled and has never come across this before! Typical :slap:

Will keep ya posted

Update 2:

Garage has called. They've had the sump off, and STILL cannot find the problem, although they now think its coming from the 1st cylinder. When the 1st piston reaches the top of its stroke, they can hear a tap!
The head will be coming off tomorrow for a thorough inspection :(
Its gonna be about £500 just in labour at this rate!

Ask them to look directly up the length of the rod. If it's bent, they will be able to see it.

Wednesday 18th January 2006, 21:49
I don't think so, but you never know. The last time I heard a noise like that from a T5 was when a big end bearing had spun and completely disintegrated, but then the engine siezed after restarting. Could be a little end, but that's difficult to examine.

Well, Ive done about 30 miles stop start driving as it was, and it went aswell as it did before the noise! She's been stopped and started about 10 times, with no problems. Update 3:

Spesh was right, it's a bent conrod! The guy said it has overboosted, and slightly bent the rod, and it JUST catching on the "web"??????
£126+Vat for a rod, £100+ VAT for the head kit, and so far, 9hrs labour!
Not priceless, just gutted :(

Oh, and it needs an idler pulley on the cambelt as its slightly noisey :(

volvotuning
Thursday 19th January 2006, 14:07
OK, now you need to find out why it's overboosted. Here's a list of things to check -

1. Actuator hose - make sure it is not split anywhere.
2. Actuator itself. Make sure it's not too tight. Normally around 3 psi.
3. Boost control solenoid (turbo control valve) - this could be faulty and is a common problem.
4. Make sure there is no hidden bleed valve anywhere, or something that could be acting like one.

To bend a rod you have to be boosting to over 1.4 bar.

Adam.

BlackBeast

One thing though, before all this as Adam said it must have been boosting over 1.4bar, it must have flown for a short while :)

How long 'til she's back on the road then?

Hi Liddo

Really glad to hear you now know what the problem is. Ouch about the bill, but try to concentrate on the positives of getting her back. Bet you cant wait

The new motor is tucked up in the garage and I'm having fun getting her spick and span. Going for a service and check up on the 25th at Independent Vehicle Services Timperley near Altrincham. Havn't used them before, but is nearest non stealer to me. Have had some good reports on them. Heres hoping its all routine as I havnt been anywhere in the car since the run back from MK. I'm expecting to have to spend something on the mechanicals anyway. Also want to change all the bushing, new discs all round. Holding off until I 'm sure all the major stuff is sound. Also wondering about a new clutch, its a bit on/off like a switch but OK when you get used to it. Are they all like that?

We'll have to organise a meet up North west sometime

Cheers

Rick

Hi Andy,

Yeah, the bits have arrived, bar the belt pulley thingy, so its gonna be tuesday or wednesday. The parts will come to about £400, and labour probably the same, so it looks as though ECU and Wheels will have to go :(
At least I'll have a spot on car, with nothing to worry about for a long time :)

Fantastic, I'm just round the corner from there (I think we've had that conversation before so you probably know that already). We'll be there from 2pm onwards although I may be back before then because I'm only measuring up a few things at my new house.

I'll PM you my details through the week so you can drop round if you get the time.

£57 for six months tax. Bargain but if you think that's good, my wife's plastic box (Smart Car) only costs £75 for a YEAR! 65+ MPG too! She does have to fight the steering though on windy days! Quite scary sometimes and the other day she nearly ended up in the central reservation on the Knowsley Expressway - she'd been driving in the left hand lane and got blown right across into the left lane and beyond! Not good.

And the lesson is.........IF your thinking of an off the shelf ECU upgrade, make sure you check EVERY little hose, and get advice on what else to check!! Best bet is to take it to VT or wherever, and get them to do it properly!

Lesson learnt, and now I've gotta sell my upgrades to cover the cost

I'll start again in a few months ;)
