I had to crack open my gearbox, thanks the previous owner snapping of an easyout in the hole of a broken mounting bolt (yes he managed to snap the bolt and the easyout!!....T.I.T.!) in order to drill it out from the other side.

Its now retapped and ready to re-assemble.

Only problem is, its seems imposible!, theres one part (a retaing pin for the selector) needs inserting, but cannot be done unless the box is already assembled, as it sits though both halfs!...my head hurts....

Does anyone know of astrip down/rebuild manual they could point me to?

Failing that, can I fit any manual box? say a 2.5 na? or 2.0n/a, as i can source one cheaply.

thanks for any help in advance guys.

Lol, I just asked this question a few weeks ago,and also on the Volvo owners club forums,as my box is U/S.. according to everyone I asked, they are all the same, just the post 97 (not sure of exact details of when it changed) don't have a speed sensor.

Aren't the ratios different between the m56l and m56h?

I'm led to believe only 1st and 2nd gear ratio's are different?

Yah. That is my understanding, people in the states prefer the M56H when doing the manual swap from an auto as the spacing is more suited for the T5 engine, but there shouldnt be any issues with the M56L ?

Check VolvoSpeed.com's message board as it probably has some comparisons somewhere.

As the person who's usually trying to hammer the differences between the M56L and the M56H into the chaps on Volvospeed, lemme save you the trouble of searching.

The gear ratios are indeed different in the 1st two gears between the M56L and the M56H, however that is not the full extent of the differences. The M56L was available with 3 final drive ratios (3.77:1, 4.00:1, 4.45:1) while the M56H was only 4.00:1. The L all have the speedometer sensor embedded in the transmission, and were on all cars up to the 1995 "model year" (not sure how that translates to build dates). 1995 was a mixed year with both M56L and M56Hs on various cars, all with speedometer sensors. Model year 1996 saw the M56H become the exclusive manual transmission, and the speedometer sensor was no longer incorporated - MY96+ cars get their speedo signal from the ABS unit.

The gear ratio for the M56L (M56H) - 1st 3.38:1 (3.07:1), 2nd 1.90:1 (1.77:1), 3rd 1.19:1 (same), 4th 0.87:1 (same), 5th 0.70:1 (same).

Great, thanks folks... I'm not that bothered about the gear ratios being different, as long as it fits i'll be happy.
