Hi Liddo,

I've just discovered why NWT 2001 are saying they're parts only - they're closing down in a couple of weeks : ( .

Have you tried MerseySwede? What did they say?

The only other I can think of off the top of my head is Deeside Volvo in Connah's Quay. They're brilliant although not especially cheap.

http://www.volvo-service.co.uk/sales.htm

They know their stuff though.

WHat sort of prices have you been quoted? Would you be as well off getting a replacement engine fitted and then trying to sort this one out yourself so you can sell it and recoup some money?

Regards

Andy

Merseyswede quoted around £450+ VAT for the Labour and gasket sets, then Id have to buy the head at £230, so £700 is a bit steap I thought!
I dunno how much a new engine would be, but mines only done 70k, so I'd of thought it'd be daft to replace the lot! Depends on how much the engine is!
I'll try Deeside Volvo aswell then ;)
Cant believe how much of a nightmare this is!!! I just want my car back, without it costing £1000,s :(

Deeside Volvo want about £1200-1300 to replace both cams and all the lifters :jaw: To swap the head, they want £550 plus the costs of the gaskets to swap the head IF I order one from Salvo

FFS, the cars only worth £3500!!! Oh we'll, looks like Im gonna have to coff up quite a bit of dosh!

Liddo mate you definitely want a second opinion, ask the original place how they know the cam is gone did they take the cam cover off?
I suppose the car cannot be moved?

good luck anyway mate

Liddo how far are you willing to go to get a good honest opinion and the work done right for the right price?

Liddo,

If it's gonna cost this much, why not just get the parts and try giving it a go yourself first? If you get stuck, stick it on a trailer and take it to a garage to finish it off.

I'm more than willing to help. If you can get some more volunteers then it may be possible to combine skills / knowlege and get it done in a couple of days.

I could even put someone up in my house overnight if necessary.

It just seems such a shame to go selling all these bits like those fantastic wheels and the RICA remap.

Andy

I agree, Liddo , you obviously have some experience and if you do the hard work yourself then it will be cheaper, however i see your point of wanting it done quick hence the big bills but if it is a lifter and cam then not that hard a job, use the haynes bible as it will get you through and plenty questions posted will get the right answers too!!

Whio is in Nottingham? Am i being slow?

DPA a volvo specialist who has worked on all my T5's, J's T5's - both Steve and Siamblue used to travel from darn sarrff to use them thats how highly recommended they are. They are cheaper than most too (I think we get a disount with them ;))

I also would volunteer my services - I have done head jobs (no puns please) before.

I also have a very nifty set of valve spring compressors.

What's the worst that can happen?? LOL

WOW guys n gals, thanks for all the replies and offers to help! The car is VERY driveable, but sounds like a tractor when stood still. I could drive to Nottingham no problem, but its just the time etc, and the thought of it going pop altogether!
I'll take it for a 2nd opinion to Engine Repair Specialists in Burscough to see if they can quote me happy.

Andy, the guy at Volvo said you need "special" tools to get the head off correctly, so that's put me off the DIY, and also the time factor too, as I dont get many free weekends :( Thanks VERY much for the offer though ;)

Special tools?

Surely only stuff like the crank locking tool (is that what it's called) which can be fabricated with a couple of strips of metal anyway I believe, valve spring compressors which Wobbly Dave has, torque wrench (I've got one and most others too probably) and an angle tightening guage (which again, I have).

See what the engine guy comes back with though. You never know, the damage (cost) may not be as bad as you thought.

I don't get too much free time either. A two, going on three, year old daughter and a new house project sees to that. However, a weekend working on a car would be a welcome break.

No worries mate. Anytime. I just hope you get your T5 back on the road soon enough. You mentioned it's driveable - I wouldn't drive it more than a few yards though, if at all.

Andy

I'd be happy to help. I dont have any kids - I hate DIY - all I'd ask is a bit of petrol money and copious amounts of coffee.

We can overhaul the head - reseat the valves at the same time? Might as well with the head off?

Dave, your a star mate, but let me see what these specialist people say 1st, then I might be calling on your expertise ;) I'd probably drive down to you, cos I wouldnt expect you to drive all the way up here in this weather!
Anyway, as I say, I'll let you know what they say tomorrow

Thanks again
