In the last 3 or 4 months my car is whistling when its cold, the whistle goes up and down in accordance with the revs. Its not a turbo noise or a exhaust noise. Have checked all the vac hoses, they all seem ok.As i said as soon as the car warms up it goes away. Any ideas?? Thanks

That will be the whistel of the turbo! When the cat is cold it is free flowing (ish) so the turbo will be heard the the exhaust system, as soon as the cat warms up it get restrictive and you can't here the turbo.

Sound the same as what mine used to do when I had a new turbo, could be the turbo on the way out, when was the turbo changed last if at all?? Milage on the car?

Turbo has never been changed,108000 miles on it. It has never gone better though.

Well as long as it aint smoking, and it aint running to much boost pressure, dont worry bout it, it might be the cat giving up.

Hi Berts70 R

I have had the same sound in my R , since the cold weather.

It is due a service and I have asked the boys to check the belt tensioners for

Lub , because it sound`s like the noise is coming from that end.

It stops once engine`s warm and does not return untill left overnight in the

cold.

Hope this helps mate.

Thanks Karl,
Sounds very similar, you are probably right with the timing of the cold weather .the car is due a service in about 4000k .I had my mechanic look it over and found nothing obvious.
