Hi Folks

the other day after working a 12 hour shift I hopped into the car and started up put my foot on the brake to move it into drive and IT WOULDNT. Looked in the mirror and checked the brake lights NOPE NOTHING

So assuming the brake light switch had gone I took my T5 - transporter home and ordered a new switch. I changed it today and still NADA!

Now im feeling a bit stupid now as Im an engineer and DIDNT check the fuse - because - I cant find it? Looked on the passenger board not there - is this likely to be in the boot on the left of the tailgate and is it likely to be THAT SIMPLE? Fell like a right Homer Simpson DOH!

ALL help appreciated please as my workplace have now to told me to remove my car or they will - to the breakers :O

My VIDA is not working atm SO I CANT CHECK that

Thanks

UPDATE:
OK so everywhere online says there is a fuse in position 12 under the bonnet - NOPE checked all the other fuse boxes nothing is fitted in position 12 in any of them. How can a lighting circuit as important as the brake lights/ gear lock NOT have a fuse?

Only thing ive seen on one site similar problem - they mention the LAMP FAILURE MODULE? The thing that tells us that a lamp is gone. I know that WAS working as it told me one of the tail maps was blown which ive replaced.

I need to 'prove' thats working by taking a bulb out. The wiring for the lights all go thru this module and if it blows then it knocks out many things. The problem is WHERE is this unit?

Well i have now bought a light out module a cheapy one from a breaker just to see if its that. The trouble i I cant find this thing in the car! Some guy shows it on the left of the boot on the estate but on my model theres the battery there and no sign of the LOM!

Cant believe something so simple has imobilised my bl**dy car!

Have you checked if there is voltage at the brake switch?

Also did you manually operate the switch (not attached to the brake pedal)? Could be the switch is not adjusted right?

Also this may help?

Another thing to check is the brake relay in the rear electronic module (apparently RM15).

I've seen a suggestion that the rear heated window fuse caused an issue, maybe something to check as with how cold it's been I'm guessing it's been used...

HI Dave

Ive replaced the brake switch so I know its not this. I havent tried the relay as everywhere seems to say it doesnt have a relay in the circuit? But I'll have to bell it out to checki though.

Thats interesting and a big help as other places ive look all list a brake fuse as NUMBER 12 in the boot! Ive looked and theres no fuse even fitted in 12!

Cheers Dave

Should be fuse number 12 in the engine bay according to the wiring diagram

Yes I agree but looked there and its 'spare' (empty slot)? Same in other fuse boxes.

Interesting one, it's not an import is it?

Not as far as I know it looks all standard UK but its funny you say that as it doesnt even have an RM15 relay that I can find? It does strike me as strange how many emoty fuse spaces it has.

Dave where is the brake light SHUNT RESISTOR please as the only thing left i can try is that? Its SUPPOSED to be in my REM but mine is totally different to the ones they show the RSH6 ON and the RM15?

My car strangely has a severe shortage of relays where there should be some?

Bad news it now looks like my model is a 'weird one' produced in 2004 but only until 2005 when the next model came out so there arent many details of these. But it explains that RSH6 and RM15 are now BUILT IN to the REM! Meaning you have to buy the complete unit if one of these is gone! They are now inside the module and cant be replaced.

Here you go bud, 2005 V70 wiring diagrams, check out Page 19 for fuses (fuse number 9 in the CEM fuse box, also shows location) and page 67 for the brake lights wiring diagram

My S60 is a facelift model but with the euro 3 engine so has some quirks (like the ££££ty headlights with plastic lenses that can't be replaced :( )

cheers Dave im running out of ideas here it points to a fuse but theres not one in any of the fuse boxes in the right locations :( I have 1 under the bonnet - 1 in the end of the dash by the drivers door and the REM on the left in the tail gate.

OMG you are right there is a fuse box I coudnt find! Will check tomorrow. If its that fuse there I owe you a crate of beer!

Yes I hate those headlights my last model was one before this with proper GLASS lamps. Was wondering if they are interchangeable?

UPDATE:
well i got my hopes up too quick its NOT fuse #9 so back to square one. So we know its a new brake light switch and the fuse isnt blown so the only other components in that line are the RM15 relay the shunt and the LOM (lights failure module) but I have yet to find where that is. As my car is a 'oddball' it could be anywhere!

I have a used REM module but that wont be here for over 10 days. Starting to think its the end of this car now. Just because of something simple thats stumped me.

I thought I knew V70's pretty well until this happened. Ive had them for over 20 years. Ive also tried a friends OBD2 but it wont read my car - its says theres fault codes but wont show them

Oh no, gutted that it isn't sorted yet :(

Have you checked that the brake switch has deffo got voltage and is working when pressed/released? Worth checking if you haven't just to rule things out!

It seems Ford really did a number on our Volvos, so much cost cutting and unnecessary complexity added...

Yes apparently the glass headlights do fit but the connector is different. I've tried getting the plastic lens off and it's a pig of a job as the sealant they use is like acrylic caulk and horrid to try and remove (heating it doesn't even touch it). I did eventually get it off but destroyed most of the headlight plastic in the process.

I called the AA out as they have a 'super computer'. Its not good news.

It points to a possible ABS module fault which he told me is going to cost £££££'s for a new one and to get programmed.

However I dont trust this diagnosis as he was asking ME how to find things? Just had a look at the electrical diagram for the brake lights and it never goes anywhere NEAR the ABS module!

I reckon its the RM15 RELAY in the REM. But in my weirdo V70 I cant just plug in a new one I have to change the WHOLE MODULE!

Can anyone recommend a RELIABLE plug in OBD2 please? I have tried several so called TOP VOLVO tools only to send them all back!

Possibly a daft idea off the top of my head, but why not bypass the pnp switch, just as we do when we convert an auto to manual, ok not ideal but if it works it buys your more time to trace the fault fully....good luck

OOh how do you mean? Just slave in wires to the gear lock solenoid and brake lights?

another quick question do these cars have just ONE rear fog light or 2? Im sure my last one had 2 but this 'weird one' has only one and I have no 'bulb failure' advisory? Was going to get it home just pressing the fog light button as I brake - dont laugh as nothing else is wrong with the car.

many thanks

There are some threads on people bypassing the solenoid on Volvoclub forums.

My S60 only has one foglight and a blank plate in the other side. Another Ford money pinching measure.

Cheers Dave yes im going to run in a wore to the back and take the brake lights out of the system and wire them into a slave system. Same for the gear interlock solenoid. Its the only way to save the car really!

Thanks for your help.

I have now discovered that although the F9 is good on the CEM I am getting no voltage from there to the brake light switch?

Ah, now we're getting somewhere.

Ok so now check both pins of F9 for voltage (the fuses should have a gap in the top for each pin to be tested with the fuse in situ). If neither pin has voltage then there's a power issue further up the line, if both pins have voltage then there's an issue with the wire from the CEM to the brake light switch (or the brake light connector/pins).

OK Dave gocha I'll buzz it all out tomorrow. I checked power on one of the spare sockets in the CEM and thats live and no other problems. So is this possibly a CEM fault?

Another question puzzling me is this 'inerlock solenoid' on the automatic gear shift. This always disengages when you put your foot on the brake. This obviously isnt working atm but I cant see this solenoid shown on any diagram?

Im not sure of its 'official name'. There are 4 pins on the brake light switch but only 2 are used so where does this solenoid get its voltage from?

Its a bit worrying as reading up this solenoid is also controlled by the CEM so this might be pointing at a very expensive failure if the CEM has scrammed?

Page 119 is the diagram you want, "Shift Lock" :)

The power for the shift lock comes from the Gearbox Module which is powered by Fuse 21 in the CEM bank

But check the brake switch wiring first...
