Hi Guys,
Had oil weeping from my angle gear for a while now and finally got round to fixing it. Lucky I had a spare angle gear in my garage which I split open and sealed up first with some instant gasket which meant it was just a case of swapping one out. Below are a few pics of the work being done. Hardest bit is removing the 2 upper bolts of the angle gear and getting the angle gear back in through the gap it came out from!

Split angle gear by removing the 10 bolts. I didn’t undo the crown nut as I did not want the grief of torquing it back up and being sure the pre load was correct. When bolted back together it reverts to the original preload.

Tip. Only removed the upper of the 2 strut bolts to remove the axle with ease on full lock right. Also wobble extensions with an air ratchet makes it easy to remove the upper angle gear bolt. Keep a tray handy for any transmission oil when pulling the axle.

Sorry for the sideways images. It’s an iPhone thing! Plus the images are in the wrong order.

So nice to be able to hire a ramp and do the work yourself, what do they cost per hour to hire? I was trying to guess at £20 i.e. the point where it's still less than half of a cheapish mechanic?

Spot on. £20 per hour is the norm. Gets cheaper the longer you book, so 4 hours is £60 and 9 hours is £120 if that makes sense. Surprisingly you can get a lot done in just 4 hours because the access is so much easier. I did this entire swap including topping up of angle gear and transmission fluids in exactly 2.5hours.

Makes good sense.

Providing you don't mess something up and it gets stranded on the lift... Which I imagine I could do :shockedbi
