View Full Version : F**king gutted!!!!

Im absolutely gutted!!! I was about to buy my new V70R tomorrow, and while driving my S70 down the motorway, it started making a tapping noise! Come to the end of the motorway, and it sounds VERY loud. A sort of metally tapping noise from near the alternator, and the tapping rises with the engine and goes fairly quiet at speed, but on tick over :jaw: This was after booting it a little (the car stuttered a little due to overboost)

Anyone any ideas??? I took it to a Volvo specialist in Southport, who said he didnt have a clue, but it sounds expensive :( Ive got the sound on my phone, but dunno how to post it. Is it possible to throw a valve??? or could it be the alternator??? I glad I didnt sell it now, only for some poor sod to have to foot the bill.

So, there's gonna be a lovely V70 R on Ebay VERY shortly with a reserve of £4500.

Yours

Gutted!

Easy way of finding out if its the alternator is to take that belt off, start the car, if the noise has gone etc etc.

Cheers Fraz, me too! :(

Gonna take the belt off tomorrow. Is it easy to get the rocker cover off and take a look at the valves???? Might do that too!

Yeah me too. I think I've got a raspy noise coming from the alternator. WD40 makes it go away for a few secs then comes back. Defo something on the belt anyway. Expensive?

whoa there, there isn't a rocker cover as such the head is in two pieces. If you undo the top of the head you'll have the cams out as well.

Try the little things first.

Good luck

If the altenator is buggered then I have one from Felicity you can buy?

Maybe you have a sticky valve adjuster, or a bit of dirt in there. I had this when i took engineer to MIRA, was really loud then went away and hasn't returned since,
I hope you haven't buggered a rod.

Gary.

Been here so many times b4 on my 3rd set of rods!!!
If it is rod once it had bent thats it, wont get loader maybe a fraction quiter as it wears through the block, if you can jack your car up have a listen buy the sump, maybe if you put a bar to your ear and listen closly to the sump, you should then know if it is a rod, normally you can hear it clearly from the rocker cover aswell.
Hope it aint mate, full engine rebiuld.

All this makes me wonder if tuning is or isn't, as the case may be, the way to go.
Do you think your rebuilds are due to tuning, or hard driving?

LOL.

Isn't your T5 built with super strong rods these days?

1st'ly been there, done that, horrible situation to be in. Do you fix it, throw in a new engine or cut losses and run... I paid for it to be fixed, it cost £2500 and I'll never make my money back. Most of that ££££ was labour, I wished I had the skills to mend it. Spesh described his re-build as easy!!!! so I'd have a go myself next time.

Why was it overboosting?

Is/was this running an MBC, bleed valve or something?

Confused as to the level of mods.

Sounds like rods to me too :( Been down that road, rebuilds really arn't that bad if you keep it simple! If you're going to the hassle of opening up the motor (esp if you're going to keep it), just get some forged H-beam rods, either from VMS (www.volvomotorsports.com), SPM (www.stenparnermotor.se) or Atech (I forget their site). I decided to go with Sten's rods personally, but then got the brilliant idea to make it complicated (lots of head work, valve springs, custom pistons... ). KISS is your friend.

Gary. Was that sweat on your forehead due to the speed cameras or the tapping noise from the top of the engine mate? I blame that Halfords oil, give it up and go back on the (wife beater) Stella Artois. :drunk:

The most common cause of engine failures is neglect.

All's Ive done is a RICA 280 which was an off the shelf upgrade. Adam did advise me to go down to VT but I couldnt spare the time. I was using standard Shell Unleaded at the time. IF i get this sorted, Im gone use Optimax from now on. :(

Update! Listened to the engine via a large screwdriver to my ear, and it does sound like a lifter issue! Hope its not a too expensive job. Also along with the tapping, is a slight metallic releaseing noise every 10 seconds near the cambelt area!!!! Mad!!

Oh well, of to my local garage next week

You may also be able to fix this with a suitable oil change. Worth trying before you change all the lifters.

I had a loud tapping issue on my Jetta GTI 16v years ago - I was using Mobil 1 at the time

Someone suggested trying another oil and using Castrol Magnatec instead got rid of the tapping!!

So Adam's suggestion might be worth trying :anmflower

Yea very true, run some lifer cleaner throgh it, and then some oil flush, if only its your lifters they are £22 from volvo (each) but ive got a set of 20, 4 months old, if interested. I bet you its a lifter if you was drivin hard at the time, seeing you only have a Rica 280 very much dought it is the rods.

Update! The mechanic has phoned me, saying one of the lifters had failed, and this has now put a flat spot on the cam! He's going to try and get me a replacement cam tomorrow from a salvage yard and then replace the lifter!!!! Looks like a few hundred quid bill JUST before Christmas!! :slap: :(
