someone asked me what type of engine I'd got in my 98 S40, so I said Petrol, 1.8, ..... no, I mean, what TYPE, you know, the digit and letters,.

Well, he lost me, so, how do I find out?

for a 1998 petrol S40, its going to be the B4184S engine mate

Broken down this means:

B = Benzine (swedish for PETROL)
4 = 4 cylinder
18 = 1.8 litre
4 = 4 valves per cylinder (16v)
S = the variant

you can be sure by checking your chassis number, it will look similar to this:

YV1VS1213WF123456

The 12 there (in bold) means you have the B4184S engine, if that was the number 13 then you have the Mitsubishi engine.

If you have the Mitsubishi engine, then your engine code will be B4184SM for that year of car.

hope that helps :)
