The car is a 2001 S60 D5, so a very early D5, amongst the first registered in fact. The car cut out the other day, RAC came out and gave the tank a whack with his hand and it started again! Diagnosis - a tired lift pump.

The car is now at my local Volvo specialist and I decided that I am not going down the 2nd hand route again, I've already had 2 used pumps, one lasted 3 years, one lasted 2 months. First he ordered one from the local factors, only 1 suggestion great - Bosch part number - 1 582980 135. Upon receiving this it does not fit my car and differs from the one installed, the wiring to the sender unit is different (my sender unit is under rear passenger seat).

So he decided to try another approach and go via the Volvo main dealer, albeit pricier at least it will be the correct part, or so we all thought. They used the vin to identify the correct part and their system suggested Volvo part number - 30761740, again only 1 choice.
Upon receiving this it is also the wrong part and has the same problem, cabling to sender unit will not reach.

The pump in the car currently originally came from a 2002 V70 and is Volvo part number - 8683330. (Bosch part number 0580 314 001).

There seems to be at least 8 different Volvo part numbers for what is supposedly the same part, but a lot of the info online in contradictory to what we already know, that the 2 parts already tried are not correct!

Has anyone changed their fuel pump and experienced similar difficulties?

A failed lift pump won't on it's own cause it to not start. The D5s will start without a working in tank pump if the right hand side of the tank has fuel. The pump's only really needed to create a Venturi to draw fuel from the left hand side of the tank. If you were to keep on running the fuel level low then even with everything working it will cut out.
