2003 S60 R Restorection

Hi,

So this is my Flash Green S60 R.
I purchased this earlier in the year after spending a year looking.
I originally was on the look out for a P2 T5 V70, after realising that decent low mileage examples are actually rarer than the V70 R I decided to switch my search to one of these instead.

So after missing out on a couple of these I decided that I could probably live with a saloon (my car at the time was a 2003 S60 2.5 T) so I switched my search to the S60 R!

Well how wrong I was, most of the cars available at the time were dogs with all sorts of hidden horrors (one I nearly purchased was a 2006 Sonic Blue car that was well documented on another forum as being a real pig!)

I managed to find this car on a bit of a whim whilst travelling back from London. So I had gone there to view/purchase an alleged 'PRISTINE' low mileage example which turned out to be a real wreck (ironically this car was for sale last month on Gumtree for less than half the price the seller wanted me to pay! As it had developed a few issues, a bullet well edged there).

So back to this car, it had literally been put up for sale on Pistonheads several hours earlier, so fully disappointed about the car in London I called the seller, arranged a viewing & went the following evening.

About the car it had had 2 previous owners, one was a main agent who had colour coded the bumpers (see below) and then the next owner had it for 8 years. The guy I purchased it from was retiring & had only used it occasionally as a second car, it also had only covered 47K!

The car had only ever been maintained at Volvo (more on this later!) there was a massive folder full of invoices for literally thousands of pounds in maintenance and repairs.
Paper work seemed in order so now for the test drive, it launched O.K so the angle gear & haldex were fine, no untoward noises and everything worked so a deal was done & off I went.

The car was some what grubby inside & out so it required a full strip and clean!

So as you can see it was a little grubby, from personal experience I have found that to strip out the interior is far better & easier to get it clean.

So this is the car gutted, the main reason for all this was the previous owner was a smoker so the interior had a stale smoke odour about it.
Once the interior was removed cleaned & disinfected the whole interior cabin.

So while the interior was out I thought it would be the ideal opportunity to service the engine as it had allegedly been done at a Volvo Dealer (they had changed the oil only judging by the filters & plugs!)

Whilst the carpets were out drying I cleaned & fed all the leather (Gliptone leather cleaner & conditioner is my favoured product)

It has only ever had O.E.M parts fitted, I could not bring myself to fit pattern parts, besides with my trade club discount there was a great deal more in cost.

On the shake down week I had ran the car I had noticed the parcel brake was poor. I gave it a tweek on the cable adjuster knowing the brakes were going to need some attention.

Lo & behold they had succumb to the common delamination problem! So much for the service it had had 17 miles ago at the main agent!

Sadly it has been sat back in storage since the beginning of August, all these repairs were carried out in February & March this year.

When I carried out the service I also noticed that the sleeve onto the angle gear was leaking.

I borrowed a tool from a Volvo specialist I know. What a pain it was to remove it took about 3 hours to get this blighter out!

With that now addressed time to move onto the A.O.C oil & filter.
Funnily enough there is actually no service interval for this according to Volvo ?
On the V.A.G vehicles oil is changed every 20K and oil & filter every 40K!

Now to move onto the heating & air conditioning system.
There is a lot of bacteria that manifests itself within here, this is something I do on ALL cars every 6 months or so.

It is an antibacterial agent that initially foams up so as to coat all of the evaporator, when dissolves it can then be passed through the ducting system. It also leaves a lemony 'clean' smell behind.

Once I had changed the refrigerant in the A/C system it was good to go.

After using the car for a month I was getting 'Chassis service required' the code was for a Failed control module!

I spoke with a Volvo specialist I know who said he had never replaced one of these before, but said that there maybe a software update available.
As the car had been recently serviced sat a main agent said it would be highly unlikely be required (how wrong I was!)

So ALL the modules were updates as it was obvious the they had NOT been done in a long while!
The chassis service stayed off for a few months but did return (more on this later).

I contacted the servicing dealer in regards to the updates but was fobbed off! The answer I got was updates that reset the service indicator are only carried out ? It actually states on the invoice for the service updates are performed.

I would strongly advise ANYONE who has a service carried out the main agents ask for a print off Pre & post update/service!

I sourced it direct, I have to say they are a great company to deal with.

I was initially a bit dissapointed with the sound as it was pretty quiet no way near as nice as the J.T Tuning cat back I had on my 2.5T.

Anyway after a couple of weeks the baffles finally settled in and it sounds fantastic!

The hose fit was a waste of time as bit was too short! I also found this!

Which would explain the lack of continuous boost.
I also fitted one of there MAC valves, upto now I can't say I've noticed any difference nor have I had any issues. I will more than likely fit a heavy pierburg valve over winter when I do some more jobs.

I ordered these back in March, but hit a hiccup in that they Did not fit even though several retailers told me they would!

Don't worry they were only fitted for a month or so whilst I had the Pegasus wheels refurbed.

Back to the chassis service light, after a couple of months trouble free motoring this returned.
When a checked on Vida it was now showing a damper fault. On further inspection it was found that the N/S/F damper had let go!
So I did a bit of digging and managed to source a set of Monroe dampers (this is the only non O.E.M service item on the car so to speak).

I have used both of there A/C products, but the Sanitiser Pro is the one that foams up & in my opinion is the better one to use as it Should be the most effective.

If you CANT find a supplier drop me a P.M & I'll see how much it is to courier a couple cans out as you CANNOT send aerosols via R.M now : (
